Anyone have experience with that? What was the treatment?

I went to the Drs today for a problem with my achilles tendon. While there I mentioned the pain I've been having in my calf. He poked and prodded (which hurt it in one particular spot) so he's sending me for an ultrasound over at the hospital. He said if there is a clot they'll bring me over to the ER. What happens from there?

My husband has had blood clots due to an inherited condition. When they finally diagnosed his first one, he was put in the hospital for three days while they administered IV heparin. No getting up to walk around (you might fall and bleed internally), no shaving (even a little cut would bleed for hours). He was then put on a maintenance dose of coumadin. You would have to watch your diet and not eat foods with too much vitamin K--broccoli, dark greens, mayo and ranch dressing (this we just found out after 14 years!). The important part is catching the clot before it travels, so in your case it's good news that your doctor sent you for an ultrasound now.

My mother had one about 6 years ago now. She also had a 2nd one on her lungs, so maybe her treatment was a little beyond what they do for the one in the leg...

Anyway, luckily she was in the hospital at the time; her endocrinologist has his offices there. She mentioned the pain/swelling/redness/heat in her calf and the shortness of breath, and they sent her to radiology right away. Then she called me to tell me she'd been admitted to the hospital with the two clots. The first night was tests galore. The next 5 days or so, she spent on a heparin IV, sitting with her leg up on a chair (she was allowed to move from bed to chair to bathroom, but not walk around more than that). The last 2 days or so, she was off the IV and taking coumadin and having blood tests...they needed to regulate her levels before she could be discharged.

She took the coumadin for 6 months and then she was able to go off. However, she's been told that should she ever need to travel somewhere via airplane, and the flight is longer than 2/2.5 hours, she'll need to take coumadin again.

I'm taking coumadin for life now after my dvt's (I had them in both legs). After they discovered the clots, they found out that I have a condition called Anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome.

If they do find clots, they'll likely hospitalize you for a few days and as the pp said, you'll likely have to get heprin injections in your belly for the duration of the hosptial stay. Then you'll likely be in Coumadin or warfarin for a few months until they are completely gone.

Good luck and I'm praying it's not clots for you.

Also forgot to mention, you can pm me if you want if you have any questions! :)

I had an ongoing issue with my right calf which seemed to appear after sitting in an extremely cramped airline seat for 5 hours. I had on-and-off pain in the calf, and what I could only describe as a bubbling feeling. Went to the doctor, saw a specialist too, had an ultrasound done at the hospital but got the "all clear". I've heard though that while there are some silent cases of DVT many people who have it get a very swollen leg, obvious leg redness, etc.

It's worth checking out if you feel something just isn't right.

This was my experience when I had my clot, except that I was hospitalized for a week. It's good that they caught it now, if that's really what it is. It can be very serious, but the treatment really isn't really that bad - although the blood tests to be sure the coumadin is at the right level do get old after a while.

Back from the ultrasound and everything looked A-OK The pain is in the same area of the tendon I'm having issues with but because of the heart attack last year he wanted to make sure. Aside from the pain I had no other symptoms which is why I never went to have it checked, although it was always in the back of my mind.

Thanks for the replies. :flower3:

Oh, and those shots in the belly. Not fun. :sad2:

Fantastic news!!!!

Also with my dvts, that was the single worst pain I've ever experienced in my life! Did anyone else have the pain and swelling too? Even today I still have to wear the compression stockings. I guess my legs will never be the same again!

I had DVTs & PEs...
I was on Coumadin for years had to go for follow up dopplers & had blood tests 2-4 times a week because my INR was so tough to regulate.
Your diet will be effected as well as special precautions you will need to take.

When 1st diagnoised I spent about a week in the hospital, mostly because of the PEs.
I never had swelling or site redness.

I was told I would be on Coumadin for life until I met with a specialist in NYC & after 3 years no more coumadin : )

At this point I just use an injection on long flights (5 hours +)

Good Luck~
