DVC'srs....D23?

They do sell some DVC merchandise at the DVC resorts, but the choices are minimal. Nothing compared the amount of D23 merchandise.

Well yes, lack of merchandise is a separate issue, which could be solved with an online store... :)

I'm not joining, at least right now. Disney seems to have a good marketing department and doing their job well.
I vote for DVC merchandise on-line instead!!

I am seriously considering joining. The price is a little steep, but I doubt I'll be able to hold out and will eventually break down and part with the cash...

if you are a massive collector.. or a pack disney rat like me.. I think som would think it is worthwhile.. if you need to sample the 1st issue it is now being showcase at a few TDS and the 1st issue looks really great...with your $75.00 you get 4 magazine which is individually sold for 14.99 or 15.99.. so if you get 4 magazines that is a total of $60 plus the special surprise gift plus the certificate which to a few is more important being to frame it and along the way tell this kids.. kids kids... etc that "look I was a charter member" you dont have to decide now you have till end of the year to avail all charter benefits...

Ok..I know I wasnt convince at 1st but after seeing the book.. I do want it.. :guilty:

Can i sign up under my son's name ? This way he can be the charter member and when he grows up and tell his kids that he was a charter member since 3yo. that would be cool :confused3

I bit. I bought the t-shirt that will have "launch day" printed on it. I figure if I have buyer's remorse later, I can always e-bay the t to recoup some of the costs.

Sooo, I get an e-mail in the night from Disney shopping that says the lanuch day t-shirt isn't available? They're out on the first day?! It wasn't supposed to be a limited run, just a limited purchase date.

I'm steamed!!!!!

I think you can. When you go to the webiste, I think there are 2 choices. "Join D23" if you're enrolling yourself and "Gift Membership" if you want to gift a membership to someone. Let me know if it works out.

Not joining. I'm lucky to even have enough money to go on my next DVC trip.
There is no way I can afford to pay $75 for the honor to read 4 magazines a year and the "priviledge" to buy more Disney merchandise.

As much as I really want to be a "Charter Member" of anything Disney, I really do not see the value in this.

From the D23 website...with my own commentary in red.

What do I receive with membership?

One year subscription (four issues) to "Disney twenty-three" publication. D23's exquisite collectible magazine is filled with stunning photography, dazzling illustrations and Disney insider perspective. It's an all-access pass to discovering the magic of Disney's past, present and future!
OK, after looking at the cover of the first one, this appears to be a nice looking, "coffee-table" magazine. Will there be a lot of substantive news and information, or just a lot of pretty pictures?

Membership Card and Certificate. The membership card and personalized, suitable-for-framing charter member certificate feature many of Disney's most beloved characters as drawn by Disney Master Artist Dave Pacheco.
To me, this is about as valuable as my "Honorary Monorail Co-Pilot" card or my "Jr. Bellhop" button from the AKV. Now, if I could flash this card and get a 20% discount off of food, clothes or souvenirs, then it would be worth my money

Surprise Collectible Gift. Just for D23 members, an exclusive Charter Year collectible gift from the new Walt Disney Archives Collection.
Well this could be anything. I will have to wait and see what it is before I commit to an opinion on it. My guess is something along the line of those free lithographs you used to get when you pre-order a movie.

Exclusive Special Events and Merchandise. D23 offers its members unique special-event opportunities throughout the year, as well as access to member-exclusive, limited-edition merchandise and collectibles.
Unless the events or merchandise are free, I see no reason to spend money to get the honor and privilege of spending more money.:rotfl:

Discounted admission to the D23 Expo (more on the Expo below).
Yeah, um , I live about 2000 miles away...

FanFare E-Newsletters. Subscription to bi-weekly D23 FanFare e-newsletter with breaking news and special offers. (You may opt out of receiving FanFare upon receipt of each e-newsletter.) I doubt it will have any more information than can be found here on the Dis!

I am a huge fan of Disney, but this just seems like a rip off. I could understand a one-time fee of $75, but if that is an ANNUAL fee, no thanks. It is all well-marketed, but it seems like a lot of "smoke and mirrors". When you really look at it, aren't you basically getting 4 issues of a magazine (which can be bought without the membership anyways) and the ability to buy more stuff? :confused3 OK, so you get the "collectible gift" and the membership card, but those are one-time things. Next year, $75 gets me 4 issues of a magazine, and the promise of "discounts".

If you have a local TDS call them if they have it out already.. here in DE it came out Yesterday... Very nice print lots of fyi but it really depends if you agree that it can cause $15(on going price at TDS right now) and be satisfied with the content. With 4 magazine totaling to $60 plus that certificate plus the surprise gift... and the discounts you'll get if you are in town (DL and WDW) when they have expo and stuff... would be more than the $75 membership... but then again that is Disney Math talking :guilty:

They want me to spend money so that I can spend MORE money?:rotfl2: Nice try Disney! I am not not feeling the magic on this one. Now, if I thought they would take the proceeds to fix their IT Dept. so that I could actually get their stoopid emails then maybe. But I got a feeling that ain't gonna happen.

(And yes, my email settings are correct and I've contacted them directly several times and they don't know why I don't receive the DVC emails. I just don't. But I should. :confused3 What is that? They gave up trying to figure it out a few weeks ago. I haven't heard anything back since they emailed me that they were going to forward the problem to a supervisor.:rotfl:)

I mentioned this in one of the podcast threads...but I'll repeat here...

This is a Fan Club. Iger even came pretty close to calling it that.

Think about any other fan club - for a band, a TV show, etc.

How much does it cost to join that fan club? $30? $50? More?

Now, what do you get out of the fan club? Typically, you get to buy "exclusive" merchandise, get a semi-regularly publication (maybe), a membership card...

This is no different. But Disney is at least trying to put some quality behind it.

I went to sign up and I want to put it mine and my husband's name. The website said: D23 Membership Name is non-transferable and should correspond to a valid photo ID.

Does that mean that I cannot put Jack & Jill Smith (assuming that were our real names)? I think that would suck having to pick only one of our names.

I had the same issue with not being to have both my DH and I join for a single cost or nominal add-on. We don't want a 2nd magazine subscription. Is it possible that they will have special events like movie previews and only let actual card-carrying members in? It sure looks like D23 Expo is only discounted for actual members (for a savings of $7 per day and $21 for the 4 day event). If I could talk my DH into going to D23, it would probably be worth joining. -- Suzanne

The last FAN Club I joined was the Osmonds......

Maybe the target market isn't "fan club" age LOL!

I was in the original Doctor Who Fan Club Of America. I think found the card a few weeks ago too...

Yes, I'm still a geek. :)
