If you happen to find a DVC memeber who traded out and had to cancel, you might find a deal on a cabin or a camp site. Other than that you mignt as well pay cash.
In a few years there will likely be a DVC at the old river country location so then you might get a better deal then.
Using DVC points for anywhere but DVC resorts isn't the most cost effective way. The points needed for other resorts are inflated, and you have to pay a fee to use them that way.
We've used our points to stay in a cabin twice now and have really enjoyed our stay. The first time, we even snagged one of the elusive 100 loop cabins.
We are camping on our dvc points march 23-30 and it's 81 points for a preferred. I just looked up the cash price and it's 857.00. So if you figure buying at 10.00 a point you come out alright. Fort wilderness is the only place you don't have to pay the 100.00 fee.
We also booked using pts and it was 81 pts without having to pay the $95 transfer fee. This is campsites only, not cabins, however once the points convert over to a "cash reservation" which this is what they consider the campsite, they can not convert back to DVC pts and will not be able to be used at a DVC resort. This happened to us. We decided not to haul camper and got a room but have to get a cabin for 2 nights at the Fort, using campsite $/pts and then moved to AKL for remainder of trip. Good Luck.
