DVC - Why DIDN'T you buy into it??

hmmm got me thinking about this now!!! Am i right in thinking that I could buy resale points for somewhere like Hilton Head whose points are cheaper to buy, but then stay at any other DVC resort I wanted to?

Yes Traci you can!!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

(But apparently some DVC's are harder to get at 7mths than others - namely BCV & probably BLT MK view. So someone told me that you should really buy at a resort that you would be happy staying at - thats why I particularly want to buy at BLT as I REALLY want to stay there!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2)

OKW is me and my sisters home resort and the main benefit for us is being able to take our parents and our other sister and her family for two week holidays. All they have to pay is the flights and to be honest we have many happy memories of full familiy vacations, where they may not have been able to afford it.

For the years of fun we've had out of the points it's worth it for us.

if you just plan on staying in values then as being cost effective then no its not good value.
Mods its value if you have got it for 10 stays
Deluxe its value is if you had it for 6-7 stays
Yes disney have been hit by the downturn and offer great rates at moment, heck even were taking advantage of the uk free dinning and latching it onto our dvc stay. But when things pick up and they will room rates will go up accordingly.
We love florida and have been going since 1992,iIf we hadent bought in 1999 we wouldn't have been able to go after 2001.
I like the flexibility of DVC regarding the points based system and a normal 2 week time-share wouldn't suit us
As some have said always weigh up the options if the rate is a concern then dvc shouldn't come into it.Look at it a a long term option
Someone mentioned the 50 year verses outher unlimited time-scales time-shares. Remember that buildings in florida have a insurance life of 50 years that's why disney will offer for 50 years

Yes you can but you will have more expensive dues (Hilton Head & Vero Beach have the most expensive dues) and it will soon eat into any savings you may have made on the purchase.

AS DVC grows the best advice if you can plan 11 months in advance then buy where you want to stay most of the time (if it is important to you) or buy 'where you wouldn't mind being stuck' incase you can't swap at 11 months.

If you are looking for a cheap option then SSR resales are cheapest of the onsite properties and has fairly low dues.

I will see if I can find the list of all the dues for you :goodvibes

thanks ever so much - i'll check that out!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Thanks for this!!:lovestruc I'll see if I can get a pack requested, and if you are able to send me any info - that would be fantastic too!!

If you go here you can watch the DVD online or request one to be sent out.

Or if you go here you can arrange to do the tour online. This will also put you in touch with a guide who will be very happy to answer any questions you have :thumbsup2

having had parents who invested in 2 RCI properties although we had great vacations we always felt tied into doing their properties, and only in the times we could get allocated.

we (dh and I) looked at RCI and DVC and quickly came to the conclusion that we want total flexibility so we don't want to buy anything.

we dont want to be tied down to any committment, payments, time allocations etc etc .... just take our money and spend it when and where we like.

Plus I dont think we'd be using Disney much after the boys are in their teens anyway, we go for them rather than for us and to have a fab family vacation, we're not a "disney couple" as it were.

Another owner chipping in - but with a definite No!

I bought way back in 92 when the points were $50 and exchange rate $2 to £1. I am horrified with how much initial costs have gone up and points per night for newer resorts. It is a lot more expensive now.

So I have had great value for money but I would not be buying now as a first time owner. I also own a Marriott and I actually think the DVC a better and more flexible investment but I wouldn't buy at the moment.

AHHH wondered where the catch was lol,,, thanks for that

When we did the tour last year - when the dollar was 2 for 1 - our guide had pretty much made up her mind in the first 5 minutes that DVC wasn't the best option for us, and told us so.
Because we are used to villa holidays off site, and told her how much we had paid for our 3 week stay that year, she basically told us that we were getting good value as it was.
We obviously looked at it in more detail, but could definaltey see where she was coming from.
If, however you always stay at Disney hotels anyway then it would probably work the other way - once the pound gets a bit stronger that is.

thank you everyone!!:lovestruc - wow what a response!!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I think I have decided to wait until our Christmas trip next year!:santa: Although it makes more financial sense to book now in relation to the £4k worth of WDW accomodation we have booked, I am not sure I am ready (or able!!:lmao:) to part with another £7k at this stage!!

Plus, we have our heart set on the MK view room we have booked at the Poly, and whilst BLT is a fantastic alternative, i'm not sure once I've bought into DVC we will ever get to stay at the poly again - something I'm not quite ready to give up just yet!!:scared1:

At the moment I believe that the way forward for us is to split our time between a MK/monorail resort and an Epcot resort, and this is what we are doing for the first time next year.:cloud9: So I am thinking of buying into BLT and then getting some resale points at BCV - but as I haven't yet stayed in the Epcot area (let alone the Beach Club!!:goodvibes), I think I should wait until I've tried this scenario out next year, before I decide to commit to a lifetime of holidays there!!!:lmao:

Hopefully the exchange rate will improve in the next 12-18mths and fingers crossed there are some DVC incentives on the DCL that I can take advantage of too!!:thumbsup2

You have all given me a lot of food for thought - so thank you!! As we do intend to stay onsite/deluxe from now on, I do think this is probably a good buy for us - just not right now - but wow what a fantastic Christmas present for next year!!:yay::yay::yay:

we couldnt and still cant afford it.

plus I dont think we will always stay on site

fingers crossed we will in sept/oct 2012 when the kids will be old enough to appreciate it

About 8 years (may be more) we done the tour & at the time it was for BWV,although we were impressed with the resort,we were less so with the size of the studio room.Prior to this we had always been off-site & once DS had arrived we would stay in a kids suite or a 1/2 bedroom suite so that everyone had their space. At the time we were looking at buying enough points so that we could stay for 3 weeks every 2 years & although we had the money we just felt that whilst we were more than happy to stay off-site DVC just wasn't for us (plus timeshare at the time was taking a battering!) perhaps if the tour guide had given us the "hard sell" we would have bought.
Move forward those 8 years & the dynamic of our future holidays has changed,DS is now a teenager & in a couple of years unlikely to want to go to WDW with his M&D:) & whilst we would still be happy to stay off-site (we know LBV well) we also felt that by buying DVC we were sort of future proofing our holidays. We bought a resale at SSR at the beginning of the year,175 points is more than enough for us to go to a studio for 3 weeks every 2 or a 1 bedroom suite every 3.Really only time will tell whether our "future proofing" will have given us the savings that we expect.
SD:thumbsup2
