DVC vs. Moderate studio

Can anyone give me a general sense on how the accomodations compare between a DVC studio and a room in a moderate resort?

Do the DVC spaces get much nicer from a studio to a one bedroom and on up?

a Studio and moderate hotel are pretty similar. Advantages of DVC:
- Frig
- Some minor DVC dscounts (park passes, restaurants)
- Microwave
- Some DVC's are premium hotels (I woudl consider some equal to moderate hotels)

Advantages of moderate resorts
- Room cleaned daily
- A little cleaner and newer furniture

The one bedrooms are significantly better than both with full kitchens, laundry, wirlpool tubs, 2 TV's, lots more room.....

DVC Studios all have at least one queen bed - moderates have double beds in most rooms.

DVC Studios are larger than moderates. The typical size of Moderate rooms is 314 sq. ft.. DVC Studios range from 356 at BCV/VWL to 455 at HH. OKW has the largest WDW Studios at about 390 sq ft.

Most DVC Studios (BWV, VWL, BWV, SSR, AKV) have a sleep sofa, making the room feel more like a living room. OKW Studios have 2 queen beds.

All DVC Studios have a mini-kitchen consisting of a fridge, microwave and wetbar.

1BR villas at all DVC resorts have a King bed in the master bedroom, washer/dryer in the villa, jacuzzi tub and full kitchen.

All DVC rooms (Studio, One Bedroom and up) have balconies as well.

Also, because DVC is made up of mixed units and the moderates are single hotel rooms, there's an enormous difference in occupancy levels. This is the prime reason that larger DVC properties, like OKW and SSR, which are spread out with multiple bus stops like the moderates feel 100% more quiet and relaxed. Like the values, the moderates literally accomodate thousands and thousands of guests at any given time.

CSR - 1,967 rooms & suites (occupancy 4 per room)
CBR - 2,112 rooms (occupancy 4 per room)
POR - 3,048 rooms (occupancy 4 per room)

We have stayed in two places for studios (BCV and SSR) and one Mod (CBR) this yr. The thing I found the most noticable was the bed(s) being first in the moderate room (right next to the door) and being after the bath, closet, fridge and micro area in the studio. This made for a MUCH quieter room at SSR and BCV. Everytime someone talking walked past our room at CBR I could hear some noise, but I am a light sleeper

If I have a choice, the studio would always win! But, sometimes we run out of points and have to use cash and then we will stay at a Mod.

.............but it's the one bedroom units (and up) that are addictive. Don't even spend a couple of night in one...you'll never go back to a studio! (or to a moderate--or to the Grand Floridian for that matter!!!

I really never thought there was much of a difference. However, a large family vacation last year changed our minds. We ran out of points with all the bookings but felt that we wanted a couple of days on our own after the last family member left. We booked POR. I was so excited. Love that resort.

Well. Had a great time. But for three days I subconsciously and consciously looked for so many things. My couch and balcony immensely, my microwave, my "homey" feeling, my more upscale sink area, extra space and maybe different kind of room setup/design (not seeing bathroom area). It was so weird. I didn't go in thinking I would miss a thing. It was a different and illuminating experience. Actually, I thought "oh my gosh have I become spoiled?". Felt some guilt. Yes, ridiculous...don't ask. Didn't last long. DVC is such a dream. And I'm beginning to really love "spoiled"..... whatever that means. I honestly bought for balconies, couches and kitchen/kitchenettes. Get tired of eating out and like to simply hang out. Nothing like hanging out at DVC resorts.

And as everyone else says, be careful with those one bedrooms. Especially OKW!!!!!!

Studios and one bedrooms are so incredibly different that I'm finding it almost impossible to book a studio at this point. Someone in my household fights and refuses to be "coerced and forced" out of a one bedroom. It's insane. I'm doing a studio for the first time in more than a year regardless. Whether she survives the stay...we'll see.

That is how powerful the pull of the one bedroom is.......

A studio is comparable in price for many situations to a moderate hotel room but IMO, any reasonable comparison stops there. From a room standpoint one should likely compare a studio to a deluxe room. Thus one can get a deluxe room for a moderate price is you play the game appropriately.

I don't think I saw this one. Studios, while they don't have a washer and dryer in the room like the one bedrooms and larger, do have free access to a washer and dryer - either in a single laundry room (hotel like villas) or multiple laundry rooms near the pools (community style villas).

Children sleeping in the same room on the sleeper sofa on their schedule, just like a hotel. DVC 1BRs have a sleeper sofa where you can leave the kids while you adjourn to the separate room to ... whatever....

We have stayed at Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter, as well as BWV and SSR. Personally I love the atmosphere of the Port Orleans Moderate hotels , but as far as the rooms themselves go definately get a studio at a DVC resort. There are only two of us so like other people said it came down to the balcony. At BWV we had a water view, and at SSR we had a perfect view of DTD. Our only difference is that we are Florida residents so we have seasonal passes , meaning we have never been during the peak seasons, I think that would make a huge difference in the ambiance of all the resorts.

When I book a studio, DH always says the same thing "But it doesn't have the washer in the room."

Funnily enough, HE has never done laundry at WDW, so WTH does he care?

Yes, DON'T make the mistake we did - first trip home, took my parents and got a 2-BR. Talk about addictive! We're staying in a 1BR this summer and DH is worried it will be too small for the 5 of us! We have a 2BR at SSR for Christmas - so we can have a Christmas tree and a place to open presents, besides the middle of the kids' sofa bed!

Very true, there is one studio at VWL without a balcony. It seems to be specifically reserved for DIS members.

I have purposely NOT booked a 2-BR yet for this exact reason. I know that the second we set foot in one, we are goners and will never go back to a 1-BR! Of course, we don't have enough points right now to support a 2-BR habit, and if I am going to be at all successful at innoculating myself agains addonitis, then I best not even LOOK at a 2-BR!

As it is, I can't even stay in a regular hotel room anymore! We took a quick trip (just one night) to Boston a couple of weeks ago, and I all but had my nose up in the air the whole time. lol Yup, DVC has spoiled us, that is for sure!
