DVC should not allow people to cancel

Looks like at least on this sub people are in general agreement to allow the last minute cancellations. I would suspect if you went out to people not as in the know as this group it would likely be supported as well then. As many called out that breakage is likely beyond this specific instance.

Something that would be good to implement during the next shutdown in the next year or two would be discounted point rooms for locals to use up some of the points.

I know many will be mad at this. That is okay you can be mad at me.
Rules are there to protect all of us including those regarding cancelling at the last minute. If Disney themselves are giving up their points that is fine. If Disney's hand chosen force of yes people are choosing to giveaway point I am not okay with it.

Disney should not be giving away my contract value and holding because they want to feel nice. I will 100% say being at Disney during a hurricane was my favorite trip so in the future if they feel they want to steal from me to give to other at least give me a chance to have discounted nights at DVC locations (they wont though).

DVC gets to make the rules for home resort rules and regulations and that includes having a hurricane policy, which they have chosen to do.

When we buy, we agree to allowing them to set policy.

So, since this is an actual policy that is part of the rules, they aren’t doing anything that is against any rule.

You don’t think Disney should allow people to cancel their DVC reservation when they believe a massive hurricane is headed towards WDW and they will likely have to close the park?

So, I assume you feel the same way about the points that accumulated during the COVID closures? Following COVID, I didn;t return to my normal trip alternating between one bedrooms and studios. Instead, I booked a GV and 2 Bedroom for a big group trip during Thanksgiving week, using most of those points up in one swoop. I don't see how that has diluted the value of anyones membership point values, at all.

What does the park closing have to do with it? You just bought a room only after all right…? :)

Mad, naw, I’m not the person who’s post from somewhere else has been quoted here.
I do feel sympathy for them because it brings back memories of my May 2020 trip which DVC canceled because they closed my resort & shut down the parks. I managed to salvage some of the points, but lost a lot too, including the OTU points I’d purchased. I also lost the $$$ I’d paid for my cross country flights & didn’t get as many days use on my AP as I’d thought I would.
Unless DVC refunded the MFs on those points or gave them some booking priority going forward I don’t see how someone deciding to proactively cancel pursuant to DVC’s hurricane policy which resulted in a villa being available for someone forced to extend their Orlando visit because their flight was canceled, made a villa available for someone forced to evacuate, or made a villa available for a CM who was part of the ride out crew to stay in is a bad thing 🤷‍♀️.

It's right there on the DVC website.

Here is the DVC/Disney RULE:
Annually, from June 1 to November 30, in the event a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center of the Orlando area, Vero Beach area, Hilton Head Island, O'ahu or for the Member’s place of residence within 7 days before the scheduled arrival date, the Member may call Member Services at (800) 800-9800† or (407) 566-3800† prior to Check-in to cancel or reschedule, based upon availability, their Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation without any cancellation or modification penalty.

Can you elaborate on what Disney did against their own rules? and what you mean by 'hand chosen force of yes people' in regards to following their own stated policy for hurricanes? I do agree, the rules are there to protect people, this is the rule, and it's protecting people.

I guess maybe I'm just the dummy here, but how is this hurting you? Are you just mad that your points are somehow diluted because of the last minute cancellations, or did you actually get the short end of the deal by this policy? And if so, how?

I disagree with you, but I respect what you’re saying. What happens behind the scenes here? Is there now an excess of “x” amount of points in the system, where x is the value of the canceled rooms? I never really thought about what an excess of points would do in a zero sum system, but I am also glad that people aren’t overly penalized by events beyond their control.

Considering we get the max breakage every year, I’m pretty sure there are more wasted points that DVC rents every year than anything “extra” we can see from these cancellations.

Great point. I think the other thing people do have to remember is that the rules for cancellation can be changed at anytime. There is nothing that prevents DVC from making cancellation penalities less restrictive (or more) if they want.

I see the hurricane policy as just another part of the home resort rules and regulations, just like the 11/7 month window, etc.
