Is there a resource that spells out how all this DVC stuff works. LOL!
I'm vaguely familiar with how the points work and that you can bank points, etc....
Is there somewhere that gives you details about all this? I've seen a number of threads discussing
transferring points or putting your points up to be "loaned out" I think was the terminology.
I'm in the ROFR phase right now so would like to start studying up. Or is this something that I have to wait
to actually be a member so I can log onto the members website to learn ALL the ins/outs of DVC?

THanks!

This probably should have been posted in mousealnious if a mod wants to move it.

Oh how I wish you had done the studying before making the offer.

Oh well. Time to learn! The member site doesn't really teach much of anything. That's why these forums exist, to help people when their understanding of legalese and the ever-changing, can it even be accessed today, website has failed.

Read this site: http://dvcnews.com/ Especially the stuff under DVC Program.

Probably good stuff here, too: http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-vacation-club/faq.shtml

Transferring points is a way to get extra points (or get rid of extra points) in a UY by getting them from (or giving them to) another member. So if I need 30 points and you HAVE 30 points, we can arrange a transfer. By DVC rules, we aren't allowed to exchange money for this.

Renting points, or really renting a reservation, means that the person with the points makes a reservation for someone else (another member, not a member, doesn't matter). They ARE allowed to charge for it (mentioning compensation isn't going to get you in trouble if you're on a call with DVC, unlike the transferring situation). It's a huge leap of faith and trust, because the owner of the points has control of the reservation and could take the money and cancel the reservation...and the person using the reservation could trash the villa and leave a bad CC and the owner would get to pay DVC back for the damage.

No problem bumbershoot.....I know most of the major issues and did quite a bit of study before hand. I'm pleased with what I have coming and think it compares very favorably to most other deals I've seen. More importantly it fit what we needed. Just trying to get the fine print on transfers, loqns etc....
We rented from a member for our trip a few months ago so Im aware of that.

Thanks for the links and direction.....it'll give me some more to study while I'm waiting for the next month for ROFR.
Cheers!

Oh and thanks for putting this in he proper forum for me mods! I thought about it as soon as I hit "post thread".

You can send an e-mail to the Time Share Store and ask them for their DVC resale brochure. It is a very comprehensive guide that gives great insight into the workings of DVC.

I actually find the member website to be quite simple and informative. There is a section called "understanding your vacation points" and gives answers to the usual questions about banking, borrowing, transferring, purchasing one-time use points, etc.". There is also the membership phone number....I'll pick up the phone and call if I'm confused about something or if I need further clarification on something. Although many people on these different forums are very knowledgeable, one should always double or triple check with member services...and always get the name of the person you speak with. Then you can quadruple check with people here that have had similar questions (like a lot of people just don't "get" the transfer rules or the "one time purchase" rules).

I think you made an excellent choice for your DVC resort (I think you settled on BLT, right?). Although it is not my favorite decor (contemporary is not my thing....but one has to realize that it is really the Contemporary Resort DVC...hence the sterile appearance) I overlook that, because of the 3 booking catagory choices, the easy walk to MK, TOTWL, close to a marina, easy access to monorail for Epcot visits, 2 full baths in the one bedrooms and probably the best DVC parking on property (except AKL Kidani with the underground parking).

Good luck with ROFR.

Thank you for the very informative thread Disneyberry!

You are correct ddd97 I finally decided to go with my first choice of BLT instead of playing the points game. Basically for all the reasons you listed. We stayed at the Contemporary 2 years ago, it was a childhood dream come true. Parents took me in '78 and we tried to stay there but it was booked up like 2 years in advance or something crazy like that. So I always wanted to stay and thought and still do think that the monorail running the middle of hotel is simply one of the coolest ideas I've ever seen. I said then it would be interesting to see if we would be able to get away from the convience of being that close instead of spending 75% less by staying at Bonnett Creek which we had done the 2 prior years. We rented points for BLT and stayed there in May of this year.

Well....here we are and convenience won but know I've found a way to still stay at 75% less rack rate ,not counting the
buy in, of course. But it certainly looks like at this point you could actually make money on that if we decided to sell in 5 - 10 years and if not it doesn't matter anyway.

One last questions......I assume I will not be able to access the members site until I'm actually a member......correct?

Thanks for all the help everybody!
