While prowling around the internet I discovered this site.

http://www.absconsultants.com/

Click on projects. Notice the three Disney projects they handled. I believe the Mountain Lodge project was during the early DVC expansion period. From the description it would have been spectacular. Maybe this was Disney revisiting Walt's 1960s Mineral King project.

Werner Weiss has an interesting write up on an abandoned DVC project at Newport Coast and other DVC history at his Yesterland site (http://www.yesterland.com/ncv.html)

I understand that other properties were locked up as well. Any ideas where? It would be interesting if we could track down some of this lesser known DVC history.

We stayed at Newport Coast 2 years ago (As a Marriott exchange) and they said Marriott always owned the property, not Disney. Not certain but I guess DVC only had an option to purchase, but didn't actually ever buy the land.

I believe DVC had plans for a hotel in downtown New York City at one time but that was dropped.

Times Square. Eisner says a few years ago that he really regretted not doing it, but when they started Times Square was just coming back from "dodgy" and they weren't sure it was going to work out to be a family atmosphere. It was pre Broadway release of The Lion King.

Would have been a nice combination DVC and the theater the renovated. Now if they included theater tickets with the membership :rolleyes1

WE stayed at the Fairfield Seawatch resort in Myrtle Beach, rumor is right next door is a huge campground, and Disney wanted to buy it and build another DVC, but the owner refused to sell? don't know how much truth there is to it, just heard it from an owner at Seawatch!
