I have a friend who heard about DVC resales and as a former DVC member (lost mine to a nasty divorce, ugghh! :headache: ) he came to me with questions. I know that there are some legit resale websites but I can't remember what they are. Can anyone help me? I want to direct him to the right place.

The Timeshare Store, a longtime sponsor of the DIS DVC boards, is the largest and best-known DVC reseller. They are one of 3-4 brokers who specialize in DVC, and are highly recommended by just about everyone who's dealt with them either buying or selling. You'll see their banner add and information links at the top of this page.

There are other brokers with whom many DISers have had good experiences, but that can be variable from agent to agent and contract to contract. There is one broker I would not recommend (although others have had good results with them) and there is one who is banned from the DIS so their names and company cannot be used here.

All real estate brokers and closing agents in Florida are regulated by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and all operate under the same laws and regulations. That includes DVD/DVC, so there is no difference in safety, legal protections, etc, whether a buyer purchases resale or direct from Disney.

I've purchased both ways and had much more professional service from the Timeshare Store than I did from my DVC timeshare salesperson.

We purchased though fidelity and got a descent deal. They have a higher number of distressed sales so their prices appear to be a little lower then others. Unfortunately, they are a small group so they can be slow or non-responsive at times unless you are constantly banging on their (electronic) door. Our purchase went off with a hitch but we also had awesome sellers and that is very important. http://www.fidelityresales.com/dvc-resales.php

I purchased my points thru The Timeshare Store many years ago, and was generally pleased. The timing was reasonable and the process was simple.

Now the shoe is on the other foot, and my wife and I are considering selling our points. First people I called was the Timeshare Store to get info on selling our points and found out their commission was 10%. Way too steep in my opinion, so we're weighing our options and trying to get more info on alternative ways to sell. Any ideas would be appreciated and fortunately we are not in a big rush.

I think you'll find the usual commission ranges are 10%-12%. You have to remember than the total sale price of a timeshare is only a few thousand dollars, so you're not going to see low commission rates like you might on a regular real estate transaction.

There are other venues you could try -- TUG, Redweek, eBay, etc. But I think you're more likely to get results by using a licensed broker who specializes in DVC. There are several and I don't know of any who have exclusive listings, so you can list with all of them.

If you are offered an opportunity to sell your timeshare which requires an up-front fee, know two things:
  1. Advanced fee schemes are total scams 100% of the time.
  2. There are no exceptions to #1

I understand the brokers have to pay for the websites and put food on the table and all that... but 10-12%? The work they do is far less than a traditional realtor, so why pay them more to do less? I'll figure something else out because that's just crazy. Fortunately, I'm not in any hurry.

We're probably going to sell our 200 BWV points after our February trip and I agree that 10% is too high. We originally bought our points from a private seller and used closemytimeshare . com to handle the transaction. They were very easy to deal with and I think we only spent $375 as the buyer. They did the title search and all the filings for that much.

I think we'll try to sell privately too and use this company again to handle everything. I just can't picture myself paying that much for a commission...
