Hi all,
Has anyone bought their DVC membership as a resale? We are seriously considering buying when we go in Sept, how does the resale angle work? Are there any hidden costs that differ from buying direct from DVC? I've seen 200pts at AKV for $94/point so a saving of $2000 but realise that DVC sometimes give you money off as an incentive.Just basically trying to cover all the bases!

Just be careful.

$94 on resale? Disney were selling AKV in December at $96 per point.

Bear in mind no closing costs, easy finance etc., resale is not as cheap as you might think.

We bought resale for BCV and including all costs, I believe we were still $2500 less for the same amount of points directly from Disney. AND ....we got almost all of the previous years points which the owner had banked.

Maybe you won't get such a good deal buying AKV but there are certainly some advantages to buying resale.

Sent you a PM Shooby!

Thanks Revtel ,we had all the DVC stuff sent thru from DVC & they were quoting $104/point so I had based my estimate on that.Down only $2 isn't moch cop!More homework required:)

The price per point on a re-sale web site is not what you'll pay as there are extra closing costs to factor in plus the cost of transferring $$ to pay for the contract. If you were looking to buy points in any of the sold out resorts then A resale is usually cheaper but the process can take 8 - 12 weeks as you have to wait to see if you pass Disney's ROFR and there are other steps to go though.

If you want to buy AKL then it's probably quicker and easier to go through Disney. They were offering an insentive of $8 off per point plus developers points but that might have just ended. Pop over to the Dis DVC boards and someone there will probably know what the current offer is

They extended the current offer to 5th March I believe, but you need a Friends and Family recommendation to benefit from this offer.

I'm sure someone here would recommend you if you decide to go ahead. This is for AKV and SSR points only.

AKV points $96 ($8 discount), SSR $94 ($10 discount). Minimum number of points for new member purchase = 160, with 100 bonus developer points (one time use and can only be booked 7 months in advance - not resort specific).

This is all from memory because a friend of mine was considering the offer, but decided against in the end. Pretty sure it's accurate though.

We bought resale as we couldn't buy from Disney unless we were actually there. Also we wanted OKW as points and dues are low there.

Closing costs can be negotiated and if you get banked points then that is a plus.

we only bought from disney in the last 2 weeks we got the discounts with no refferal. we were offered $10 off of akl but bought ssr at $8 off we all got the full years pionts so we have 160 now and another 160 to come in October no developer pionts .

Are you absolutely sure the money off wasn't the other way round? ie, $10 off SSR and $8 off AKL? See this thread for the current offer: http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1737619

Welcome to the DVC by the way :)

Seems to change depending who you speak to.

In December, we were told that SSR and AKV were the same reduced price - $96 each. We bought 200 at SSR, and now we've got another 270 developer points to use by the end of this year. Decisions, decisions...:dance3:

Maybe so, but despite the changing offers (and I'm an avid reader of the US boards, more so than the UK boards) it's the first time I've ever read of AKL being offered at a bigger discount than SSR.

Nice number of points to have to use btw ;)

Hi, we have just come back from WDW and were looking into buying at SSR while we were there. Were originally told could only buy while in US but, as we are UK based, the DVC rep told us not a problem to do when back in the UK. We were quoted $8 discount at SSR to take it to $96 per point, and were offered a discount or one time points bonus equal to the amount we purchased. They have also extended the offer now we are home, so might be worth you going back to them to see if you can do the same - we didn't need any referral to do this. We are also looking at the resale option as I can't work out which would be best for us at the moment. I am hesitant about buying on resale in case anything goes wrong, but if it saves a meaningful amount of money would consider it. Am tryng to work out best options with flilghts etc too., as I seem to be getting expensive quotes at the moment so hope you're finding this part easier than me!!
Good luck whichever route you choose.

Hi scousetink, I notice we live in the same area. I own points at Beach Club Villas which I am considering selling. Let me know if your're interested.

as scousetink says it was $8 off ssr and i remember it was $10 off of akv the dues are higher at akv by about $.50 per piont they have to look after the animals so probably why they were offering the disc evan though it has 3 yrs longer on the lease.
shooby do i would wait and see what they are offer as a discount when you are over there they can also do the financing for you which they cant do from the uk
i think the closing costs were about $300 ish will check tonite when i get home from work
