Hello,

My mom and I are in the first stage of planing a DW vacation next year in late November. We have always stayed at a hotel on the DW grounds but it can get pretty pricey. We recently discovered that we can rent a DVC space. How does this work?

Sincerely,
Kelley

Hi Kelley, welcome to Disboards!

The quick answer is that when a DVC owner has extra points that they do not plan to use they can rent them out. The person looking to rent picks what kind of room they would like to stay and where at. From there you can either look directly for a DVC owner or go through a service such as David's Vacation Club Rentals, which advertises on this site. You will likely pay more for a service but there is a bit more security doing it that way. Once you do all the paperwork the owner will book your room in your name and send you all the confirmation information. At the resort you just check in like normal and there you have it.

Booking windows at a DVC owner's home resort opens 11 months before the trip while the window for everyone else opens at 7 months. This means if you are trying to get in to a very popular resort, such as the Polynesian, you may need to find an owner to rent through and you will pay a premium. Thanksgiving time is not as bad as Christmas, but still can be a busy time to book. Other places such as Saratoga Springs (my home resort) are much larger and can be booked much more last-minute. If you want to get a highly sought after resort then a service such as David's might work best but don't forget the premium.

So you won't be able to book until December at the earliest for Nov '17 and have plenty of time to look in to your options. You can view most of the point charts on the DVC website and get an idea how many points you will need. From there you can do the math and decide if the rate is worthwhile to rent and go from there.

Hi again,

I can't seem to find anything that will help me to figure out how many points I need. We will be staying in Disney from November 12th Thru the 19th. We are looking at a studio with a standard View at the Polynesian. Can somebody tell me the amount of points I need? Thanks!

There is a button at the upper left on David's website called "cost calculator". It give you a calendar to select dates and you can toggle between what the cost to rent thru him would be or if you just want to see the point requirements.

The site that chalee94 pointed you has a cost calculator that can also show you the result in points.

check out david's site here for more information. he is a broker and is used to walking people through the process, so his site has all the point charts and details (i.e. no cancellations).

Oh I forgot to ask if the price for points is the same in 2017 the same as it is now?

Until you sign a contract with someone, the price per point can always change, and different Members/brokers may charge significantly different prices per point.

Renting points is a bit like renting someone's house at the shore. You're making an arrangement with a DVC owner (DVC is Disney's timeshare), paying them to make a reservation for you with their points. The owner sets a cost per point, and you pay that cost times however many points are needed for the reservation.

The cost per point is entirely up to the owner - whatever they wish to charge. There's a general range that most owners fall into, it can vary somewhat with how difficult the reservation is to get.

There are some important ways in which this differs from making a hotel reservation through Disney:

1. Since this is a timeshare, limited housekeeping services come with the reservation. If you want daily housekeeping, you will have to pay separately for that.

2. Any promotions that Disney is offering don't apply to DVC reservations. No free dining, etc. Your transaction is between you and the owner (or broker, if you use a company like DVC By Request.

3. If anything goes wrong along the way, Disney can't help you. Again, the transaction is between you and the owner or broker.

4. Assume that your reservation is un-changeable once you make it, and that your money will not be refunded if you need to cancel. This is important - DVC's cancellation policies can be complex, and the owner can lose their points if you cancel, so you won't be getting your money back if you change your mind.

5. You'll find the best availability if you book at 11 months out. DVC resorts book up very quickly, and certain resorts and/or room types can be next to impossible to get if you wait.

Hi

If you make the booking 11 months out, which would be Dec this year, then you lock in the price and it can't change. if the price per point change say in apr 2017, then you won't need to pay any additional fee because you have already booked your vacation in dec 2016.

The point amounts for your dates in a studio with standard view at Poly is:130 points which is 2080$

Regards

I will add that using a broker will give you added peace of mind, but no more security to protect you from things going south with your reservation. If something happens to your reservation (the owner cancels, or Disney cancels for owner delinquency), the broker will refund your money. But you'd have to then find another reservation for your trip.

Things to keep in mind when renting DVC points - there's usually no refunds, cancelations or changes. Only rent points if your dates are locked in. There's also no daily housekeeping.

DVC does NOT include daily house keeping. You will get fresh towels and supplies (coffee, sugar, soap...) on the 4th day. Extra service can be purchased from the resort if required.

Most important thing I tell my renters:

There is no daily replenishment of your coffee. Find out what kind of coffee maker the unit has and BYO if you must have coffee, because coffee is more important than anything else ever.

We've rented 3 times before we bought and its a snap! Go through Daves as suggested or google the other big options. Don't go rogue your first time (or ever). I used Daves for our trip in October and they were able to secure me what I needed when a rival could not although I find their system slightly less sleek and user friendly, they are responsive and WILL get you what you need. Contact them and have faith knowing it is legit and what they tell you is true. You may end up on a wait list but do not worry, they ARE working to fill your order. You can request the Magical Express transportation and buy the dining plans through them up to 30 days before you go. You will still get to use My Disney Experience just like you had booked through disney. Contact them and you'll be on your way!
