DVC - Rental of Points

Have any Canadians rented points from DVC owners? If so, could you please share your experiences, as to how difficult this was, how you paid, etc...and also, how much it is reasonable to pay per point?

I have rented on 3 occasions. For me it was fairly easy. The renter will check availabilty at the resort of your choice, then tell you how much deposit they want and how the balance is to be paid. I send my payment by money order. The renter usually does not send the confirmation notice to you until a big portion is paid off. I paid $9/point twice and $10 once. The going rate seems to be about $10 and I personally would not go any higher. Whatever you do do not rent a week from e-bay- way to expensive. The one risk is the owner cancelling the room before you get there, I have yet to hear of that happening but you are putting all your trust and money into someone you do not know.

Thank you so much for the information! I have been in contact with a DVC owner in the meantime, who has also been of great assistance in explaining things - I feel like a total idiot, but knew absolutely nothing about how this stuff works (and now I know a little bit!).

Check out the Rent/Trade board here on the DIS. I've never heard of anyone having problems with DIS'ers. I rented from a DIS'er here in London so payments, copies of confirmations etc was not a problem. And I knew where he lived, so no fear of him cancelling my ressies I have a couple of different friends who have rented from people in other parts of North America and it all went incredibly smooth. It's a great option depending on what you're looking for.

I agree with not going higher than $10/point ... you can always find some on Rent/Trade offering for that. However, if you want a special resort (ie. BCV) or a very busy time of year (Christmas/Summer/March Break),you might be paying higher than the $10.

We have rented 2 times already.... 1 bedroom @ BWV for 2 nights in May 2004, a studio @ BCV for 4 nights in Sept 2004, and our next trip is a 2 bedroom @ OKW in early Oct. 2005.
Different experiences at both so far. Overall like BWV better than BCV though the pool is an bonus @ BCV, but very happy with pool @ BWV... better kiddie pool than regular WDW resorts.
We rent because of the number of people we travel with.. cheaper than renting 2 hotel rooms and kitchen saves money on food. Plus we don't do parks more than 2 or 3 days tops.
Eventually, we'll get our own points, probably after this next trip to WDW... either a resale or at Saratoga Springs.
WE paid via money order for the rentals of BWV and BCv but I am paying through paypal for the OKW rental. $10/pt for all of them.

If you are sure of resort you want and want to make sure you get it, find a renter who has an 11-month window or has points at that specific resort!
