Hi everyone,

Like a lot of other people on here my wife and I are looking at buying into DVC for the first time. We looked at this in 2003 on our honeymoon, but just being married it was not possible at that time. A little over 6 years later we are looking at this again. We both believe that it is not IF we will buy in but WHEN. We are looking at buying into AKV at 100 points since it is just the 2 of us. We are working with a Disney agent and I have contacted the timeshare store. I think for the first time purchase we are leaning more towards going the Disney route for several reasons. Our agent has been nice and is answering our questions quickly, but we feel a little rushed to make a decision for a few different reasons. I know a lot of people have said take your time.

Anyway on to my main question. Let's say we join in 2010 at the 100 points level. Can we bank our 2010 points into 2011 and then borrow our 2012 points to have a bigger vacation in 2011? Then we could bank our 2013 points for 2014. I'm still a litte confused on the banking and borrrowing. Can you bank and borrow for 1 year? In other words can you arrange it so you can have 3 years worth of points in 1 year or can you only do 2 years worth of points in 1 year?

Thanks!

yes, you can use 3 years of pts in one year, by banking the prior year's pts forward and borrowing the next year's pts back one year.

be aware that banking and borrowing are final transactions and cannot be undone.

(and if you have any pts left over, you would only be able to bank them one year forward, so if you had a vacation in 2011 using 2010-2012 pts and had a couple of pts left over, they would all expire before a vacation in 2014.)

So if I have say 50 left over points for 2011 I can bank them all the way to 2013, but have to use them by 2013?

nope - i was too vague - you can only bank one year ahead. then the pts expire as they cannot be banked again.

so if you have leftover pts, they would be current pts from 2012 and you could bank those into 2013, where they would expire. you could also transfer them to another DVC owner (if they are current pts - banked/borrowed pts may not be transferred) or if you have enough to make a small reservation, you could rent the reservation.

you may also want to go through the Understanding Use Year thread as your usage is by "use year" and not by calendar year.

I'm new to this as well (I just bought in to BLT last week!), so correct me if I'm wrong but when dealing direct through Disney on an initial purchase the minimum amount of points you can buy is 160.

Disney relaxed the 160 points rule for AKV. I believe the new member AKV minimum is still 100 points. At BLT, the minimum for new members is 160 points.

Can anyone tell me how many rooms are set aside for DVC members at each individual resort? In other words, at OKW there are x number Studios, y number 1 BR, z number 2 BR and q number Grand Villas...and the same info for the other DVC resorts. Thanks.

You can buy AKV and SSR at 100 points through Disney. All others that are available are 160. Since we don't have kids 100 if prefect for us to start.

when we were there last Oct. we were told that Disney kept 2% of the units for their use.

Saintstickets- To view the number and type of rooms available at each DVC resort, go to www.dvcnews.com and then click on the link near the top which says DVC Resorts. Each resort will be listed and you will click where it says general information. This will provide the information you requested.

Warning: they can pull back that lower requirement at any time. I see you are looking to purchase in 2010 -- they may have returned the minimum to 160 by then. No one knows at this point. If that happens and you really only want to start with 100, you will need to buy a resale.

Good luck!

Thx Chic but I am confused about something. The above referenced site at DVCNews lists no Studio or 1BR available at OKW for DVC members. http://www.dvcnews.com/index.php/resorts/old-key-west/general-information
Surely there are some available for DVC members? If anyone knows different, please advise or have I misread the info. Thanks.

If you look closely at the room information, there are 230 "lock off" 2-bedroom units. Simply stated, there are 230 Studios and 230 1-bedroom units available. Each unit is connected to the other. None of these are dedicated which means there is an inside door attaching the Studio to the 1-bedroom unit. DVC members can choose to rent just the Studio, just the 1-bedroom, or combime both units into a 2-bedroom accommodation. Does this help?

Funny thing is we decided today to buy into AKV for 100 points through Disney. We've been doing our research and talked to a few DVC members and we are ready to commit. :yay:

Good for you ! Sending pixiedust: all goes smoothly and we'll get to

:welcome: you HOME real soon :goodvibes
