DVC prices tanking?

It’s still $1000 round trip for a spring break round trip from Portland….
PDX is lovely but hasn’t it always been more expensive to fly in and out of? Maybe SEA is less? But then of course you have to add on parking costs.

It seems Orlando is still super cheap to fly to and from compared to other destinations, coming from the Midwest. It’s great for snowbirds trying to escape the polar vortex.

It’s definitely going to keep WDW as a once every 3 years if at all destination.

That’s 2-3x flights to SNA and 2 flights to HNL….

We've reduced our US trips post-covid from 2x to once annually but that's messed up my points. I have enough for a week at VGC separately from my WDW trip but now we are combining DL and WDW trips leaving me with an excess of VGC points that have now become SAP!

Flights to the US are setting us back about 3k per person return, it's cheaper for us to fly to Europe because more airlines service that route.

If those VGC points are a DEC UY… 😉

I'm a proud member of the VGC SAP club as well!

Prices will fluctuate based on motivated sellers meaning there is not enough buyers or buyers willing to pay X price.
Tanking: exactly 3 things will cause this. With a side note of the end of a contract which no one can truly predict at what year.
1 Disney falls out of favor in a very big way
2 Disney stops taking care of the resorts
3 As was seen in the 2000s when the real estate market drops Condos drop at a faster and higher percentage then a house. This is 98% what will cause a big drop. If you wait for it and can afford to purchase you will get a good deal. When is the question just as good as predicting when the housing market will hit another high. If one could predict either the same could be done for the stock market in which case the point price would not matter.
We bought 21 years ago the best I will say is the dues have exceeded our buy in years ago…. What is true then is true now focus more on the dues as saving a few thousand now hypothetical will pay one year of dues in the very near future on a 150 point contract much less 200 or larger. And yes I can sell my direct points and make a good profit never in my wildest dreams did I think that would happen nor the reason I bought. When I am done I am done if it 0 back on the purchase I am fine with it…… so long as I no longer have to pay dues on something I will not use.

To the original question:

  • Prices have indeed trended down for a few years.
  • They have mostly stopped trending down recently, but there are some resorts that are exceptions to that.
  • I think prices are significantly more likely to increase than decrease in the next year
  • If the stock market for some reason collapses, history shows there will be a lag before prices fall - people will try to make it work first before they sell their precious piece of Disney.

If it wasn't for credit card points and transfer partners I don't think I could even rationalize DVC. But because DVC makes you plan so far in advance the 11 month window corresponds well to new flights which have the cheapest award tickets...usually.
Just now diving into utilizing reward point transfer to partners. This is great to know

Oh I haven't paid real money for a flight to MCO for a few years now! AMEX and Chase getting me Delta (yes their skymiles stink but I'm entrenched) and JetBlue flights when cash prices from NY are insane. Like the rest of you I remember getting sub $100 roundtrip flights in the slower seasons. Now every airline from here charges you exotic international prices just so you can land in an airport that still has carpeting.

As for the main topic of this conversation I...again like many of you...watch the aggregator sites like a hawk.

I'm pretty sure I haven't missed a day of looking in well over a year now...and may I say how nice DVCforLess.com is! I agree that the prices either falling or rising are very resort specific but as a whole I would say that pricing looks like the hilly portion of the slinky dog track. Some are on that up and down heading lower and some stable or heading higher. In terms of stocks some are making lower lows and lower highs and some are making higher lows and higher highs. Fun little game we're a part of here isn't it.

I think the most important strategy for getting the lowest prices is to not NEED points immediately and to be patient and persistent and also have some damn good timing that you find the most motivated seller at the right time when no one else is making asking price offers. That perfect storm will net you a sweet deal.

Where are you learning about this? I find it difficult to find good info sources for this. Mostly I am just trying to use Chase cards and fly Southwest as much as I can because that seems simple.

This! I don't know why it has taken me so long to realize that I can get a direct AA flight from Chicago to MCO for average 9,000 points. Just had my husband sign up for the Citi AA with a 75,000 bonus! That's 2 round trip tickets for us.

Two of our next trips are paid for with United miles. Requires more points but there are way more opportunities to earn UR points that can be transferred to United.

This thread here on the DIS is very good. https://www.disboards.com/threads/i...2023-see-first-page-for-addl-details.3905155/ I have also been reading various blogs, https://thepointsguy.com/ https://frequentmiler.com/ are two of them. There are the Flyer Talk forums as well.
