DVC Points Usage Question

OK, I'm new to this and although I think I know how it works, I just want to confirm with you guys rather than sitting on the phone for an hour to DVC.

My use year begins in December, having joined last year about this time. We banked our 2008 points as we plan to travel every two years or so. Now, we plan to travel next year in December or January. My assumption is that the points we've banked from this past year expire on December 1, even if we book for sometime in December prior to that. In essence, unless we travel before December 1, 2009, we lose our 2008 points. Is this correct?

And if that is the case, what happens if we book for a vacation starting November 30, 2009? Can the points be used for the whole trip, or just that one day and the rest expire? Thanks for any insight.

It is my understanding that the banked points will expire if not used by the end of that next use year. So, they would expire and could not be used for trips taken after 11/30/09.

Were they actually 2008 points? Those are points you would have been receiving this Dec 1st, 2008. Since you've already banked I'm guessing that they were 2007 points and yes, you would have to use them by 11/30/09. If they were actually 2008 points banked into your 2009 UY then you would have until 11/30/10. The late UY's can get kind of confusing on what points you're actually dealing with since we get them when the year is almost over!

I believe Kat4Disney is correct, as you will not receive your 2008 points until Monday (Dec 1st 2008), so you must have banked the 2007 points into your 2008 UY. Use those 2007 points for a quick few days getaway this winter and bank those 2008 into 2009 for next winters trip.
There is always the option of renting or transferring them at $10-$12 per point and paying the MF's with that money generated.

The PPs are correct. You cannot bank your points until you are in that UY. So you actually banked your 2007 points that you got Dec 1, 2007. So they are good from Dec 1, 2008 until Nov 30, 2009. You won't be able to use them for any nights in Dec 09. Even if your trip starts in Nov 09.

Thanks, all. I don't think a trip is going to happen before December '09, so I guess I should try to rent the points or I'll lose them. And thanks for the explanation on the UY. I get my 2008 points on Monday, I guess, and I've banked my 2007 points. A little confusing there. Sure would be nice to go in a few months, though.

Each night is counted individually. So those banked 2007 points could only be used for the night of November 30, 2009. The rest of the nights would have to use 2008 banked points or later.
