DVC Points for Cruises - good or bad?

Ordinarily we wouldn't think of using our points for a cruise, but we added on last summer and have a pot of developer points that expire soon. As Steve has just started a new job, and we're planning on a July trip and a December trip already, we might splurge to make sure we can use them before they disappear.
:cool1:

I noticed that if you book with the DCL you can choose your location of room, but if you use your points can you do the same or do MS choose your room?

I was able to choose my staterooms when using points.

We used 365 points for 2 cabins for a 4 night cruise last year (cat 6 & 10). We had extra points so did not feel like it was a waste.

We are considering using points for the kids on a cruise this Dec. That will cost us 104 points.

The only advice that I can give you is to use the points how it suits you. It is your money and your vacation.

There have been many good answers regarding the question posed. For us, we had bought into two new contracts that came with extra points. Last month we went on the 4 night Wonder cruise for 2 adults and 2 children in a Cat 5. This cost us around $2800, or it was in the neighborhood of 460+ points. It was much better for us to rent the 300 points that we had which brought me approx $3600, which paid for our cruise and airfare. I didn't mind renting and generally the process was simple. I was, however, very specific on my rental agreements which provided me with renters that would be comfortable with what I could provide. :goodvibes

We went on our first cruise in September of 07 and fell in love. Thats when we signed up for the disney club. Our main motivation was the ability to go on a vacation every year! We both work alot so its nice to FORCE ourselves to go on a vacation every year. We have the ability to go off peak season which would allow us to go on a cruise every year, or a nice long stay at a resort.

I think you have to take into consideration the time of year that you go on vacation. Since we always do our vacationing on the value seasons its a no brainer for us. And being part of the DVC allows us to decide on a cruise... or a resort.

We are in our late 20's and almost paid off our initial point purchase.... so after thats paid off I think we really get our value. I don't think you will feel like your getting a value on your points until you pay them off.
