I have never used DVC points to book a cruise on the DCL but am thinking about taking the plunge. My questions: how do members typically handle the large number of points it takes to book a cruise (particulary for four people)? I thought I once heard for cruise bookings you could borrow points further out than one year--is this true? There are rumors that DCL may be going to northern Europe in 2010 and the planning would have to start now. Does anyone remember what the points were for the Mediterranean cruise offered a couple years ago, or what the approx. points would be for an 11-12 days cruise on DCL? Any info from those who have sailed down this path before is appreciated.

You may book further out than a year - up to 2 years in advance. We usually book ours between 1.5 and 1 year in advance.

Banking and borrowing for DCL is no different than banking/borrowing for any other reservation.

You cannot borrow points any further than one year in advance. This is true with DVC reservations, DCL cruises and everything else. The points must be available as of the date of the reservation. So, if you are going to be booking a cruise for a 2010 date you'll be able to use your 2009 (banked), 2010 and 2011 (borrowed) for that reservation.

Points for the European cruises will be high. An additional dilemma is that the points charts are not out for 2010 yet but DCL is rumored to be starting 2010 bookings in late October.

As for the large number of points needed for cruising, some people pay points for some passengers and cash for others. As long as the first passenger is paid for with points you can then split the other passengers as you wish. The only rule is that you must pay all-points or all-cash for each passenger. So you can pay points for one adult and cash for everyone else, pay points for the adults and cash for the kids, etc. It's up to you.
