DVC Point Transfer Rules

You can transfer anytime. You do not need to be making a reservation.

You will only see them when making a reservation because it’s a temporary contract. They work fine online at 7 months or less.

It is booking during the home resort period that doesn’t work. Though, some have reported that when they match exactly, they do.

Given these would be different UYs, you may have to call if using during a home resort priority period.

If you cancel a trip with them, they just return into the temporary contract.
I can confirm this is true.

Once banked, they can’t be transferred. Had you transferred first, she could have banked them.

The only exception for transfers of banked points is when it’s between accounts owned by the same people.
Did anyone see the recent post by WDWNT saying DVC changed the rules on transferring points and now we can transfer banked, borrowed, and in holding? I've seen this nowhere else besides an Instagram post

question about transfer points and how to use them. I have a vacation that was booked at about the 6 month mark (so no home resort priority). If I receive points transferred to me, can I ask member services to reallocate the transferred points to use on the already scheduled trip? The transfer points would be in the use year of the trip. The transfer points would only partially pay for the reservation, so can the transfer points and my points basically mingle to cover the whole reservation or does the transfer amount have to pay for an entire day's stay?

Yes, but your own banked or borrowed points must be used first.

Have 2 separate memberships (same use year, different titles). Recently realized I have 4 points in one membership that were banked in from last year, with no plans to use them before my use year ends in December.

However, I do have a reservation for next month which I booked through my other membership. Would it be possible to transfer the 4 points into that membership and have them reallocated into the upcoming reservation so I don’t lose them? I know it’s only 4 points, but I’ve never had a point go to waste in 25 years of membership, and hate to start now!

As long as you are more than 30 days out. If less than that, any freed up points go into holding.

It might be possible and any change would need to go through MS and cannot be done online, but it depends on your actual circumstances:

1. If the existing reservation was made during the 11-month window, then switching points used in the reservation via a modification is possible only if: (a) the points you are transferring are for the same home resort that is in the reservation, because otherwise the switch can be done only by canceling the reservation and attempting to redo it, and that could result in having no reservation unless your current reservation's room type and all desired dates are still separately available for anyone to reserve (highly unlikely). and (b) you complete the entire process of transferring and changing the reservation by at least 31 days before the existing arrival date of the reservation, because otherwise doing the reservation change would result in any points coming out of the initial reservation going into holding, which then must be used during the use year they are in and can be used only via making a reservation 60-days or fewer from date of arrival.

2. If the existing reservation was made during the 7-month window, then any transferred points from a different resort can be used to replace points in the reservation via a modification of the reservation, but the change in the reservation still must be completed by 31 days before the current arrival date to avoid any points coming out of the reservation from being put into holding.

Ah, OK. Sounds like I may be out of luck. The reservation is for BWV and believe I made it in the 8-11 month window. My second membership (the one with the 4 extra pts) is all VGF points. However my other membership has a couple contracts with both BWV and VGF points.

Yesterday I had some banked and borrowed unused points in that first membership for both BWV and VGF. I called and MS was able to reallocate ALL of those into my existing March reservation. So given the fact that they let me relocate VGF points into that reservation yesterday, are you saying it’s only transferred points that you can’t reallocate to another resort if original ressie made prior to 7 mos out? Seems like a pretty specific and random rule, but just want to make sure I understand. Still have 2 weeks to figure this out before my 30 day mark.

Worst case I suppose I could try to make a weekend reservation somewhere this spring using those VGF points as part of it and hopefully rent it out.

Thanks!

They typically can’t replace non home resort points into a home resort booking…unless any of those nights still have availablility

Honestly, I’d call MS and see if it can work because it’s possible that there is something showing behind the scenes that allowed it.

I will say that a few times I have had restricted points from a different resort go into a home resort booking online.

Unless the rules have changed, you should not have been allowed to replace BWV points in that March reservation with VGF points if the reservation was made with BWV points during the 11-month window. The MS person you dealt with either did not know the rules, or the reservations was still separately avaialble when the change was made, or the MS person decided to make a special exception for you.

The only other recognized exception I am aware to that inability to use other resort points for a reservation made 11-months out is that you can add dates to a reservation using other resort points at 7-months out. A reason for the general rule is that, if you were allowed to just switch points to those from another resort at 7-months out, there would be many members owning, for example, just enough expensive VGF points for making a reservation at 11-months out, and then switching all the points to low-cost SSR points at 7-months out, and then banking the VGF points into the next use year to use for another trip made at 11-months out.

I know, I wasn’t really expecting it to work, but have never made a request like that. I’m quite certain the reservation would not have been currently available at BWV (esp a Boardwalk view room) as BWV is booked solid for March.

I don’t think the MS rep was sure it would work, but she said she would just click on the points and see if it worked. And it did. Replaced some of regular Boardwalk pts I had used originally with 45 VGF points, freeing up that same number Boardwalk points to now be able to be banked before my deadline.

It’s a mystery I guess!

Thanks everyone

As to the transfer topic, be aware the new transfer rules now appear in the online version of the Home Resort Rules and Regulations (sign into DVC member site > touch MY DVC > in left hand column click Membership Documents > click on Home Resort Rules and Regulations, and you will find the new transfer rules in section II.6).

Question new member here. Can you get a transfer of points from two different members? We have family that has DVC and are thinking of doing a big trip pooling our points for a grand villa but it would need to be from the 3 families. Is this possible?
