Hi to All,

Ok would this be a good service or not? I got this idea while I was posting on another thread where I was saying that I did not really mind interfacing with folks during the rental transaction process. Some times trying to rent your points can be a real hassle and some folks just don't know all the ins and outs of renting points so here's my idea:

You as DVC owners would work through me to rent your points and I will do all the interface work with the potential renters, answering all the questions, checking for availablitiy, working out the points and exact reservation, etc. You as the points owner would only have to call once with the information I give you, make the reservation, and mail out the written confirmation either to me or to the renter (probably to me would be better). I would imagine some type of very simple contract would have to be drawn up so that you as the owner cannot simple cancel the reservation but I'll need to work that out later. For my services I would ask a $2.00 per point fee and will try to get between $10.00 and $11.00 per point for your points. So your net per point would be $8.00 or $9.00 per point. This would be a very hassle free service for the DVC owner.

So what do you all think? Reasonable, Unreasonable, Good Idea, Bad Idea? Do you think any one would even be interested in a service like this?

Just looking for comments and maybe DVC owners that might be interested in such a service.

Thanks,

I just rented some points for the first time on the Rent/Trade board and the process was very simple, no hassle at all. I got $11, $10, and $9 per point for three seperate transactions.

I think you have a good idea, but since I did this myself for free, I would be reluctant to pay $2 per point for someone else to do it. I mean all you really need to do is send some emails, maybe make a few phone calls, and then call MS and make the res. Very simple. The whole process took me less than 1/2 hour for each transaction.

I think it would be more trouble than it was worth if that was ALL you did. The only way to do this and make it workable I think would be to have an independent TA who also took in the points for cash options so other members could use them for cruises and the like, just like through MS. It could be a win win situation. The only problems I see are that this would truly fit in the commercial rental category, the only thing that's come up so far that would under any definition. The other problem would be that you'd have to work with only points transferred to you to make it workable, thus no banked or borrowed points. Trying to work as a go between without handling the points would be next to impossible IMO as well as financially risky if you took on that role as you wouldn't have control of the points and reservations.

I could see doing it for one or two occasions but not as an ongoing business.

That's a really good point Dean and after sleeping on it that is basically what I came up with too. I might be able to work with a few DVC Owners but it would be risky. The only way to really make this work is to reach some sort of agreement with Disney that would allow me to manage an account that DVC Owners could transfer borrowed, banked and regular points into. It would have to be some type of commerical venture and that is not something I would not be interested in.

I was just thinking it would be a nice little side job maybe bringing in $500-$1,000 a month but as Jim said the rental process is a pretty easy one. Why pay me $100.00 bucks on a 50 point rental when you can do it yourself.

You'd be better off taking transfer while paying cash then rerenting them. Or just buy enough points to rent yourself at one of the cheaper places like HH or OKW.

Interesting idea, Y-ASK, and I applaud all the entrepreneurs who are constantly looking for new business opportunities. I'll probably be renting out points now and then over the next few decades, and I'm not sure what value you'd add. If I do it myself, I still have to make the reservation, mail out the conf. letter and collect a payment; I'd still have to do these things if I went through you. Soliciting 'customers' isn't that hard, given the internet and the DIS DVC R/T board. In fact, you would be an additional risk involved: you could get the $$$ from the 'tenent', have me make the ressie, then skip town. Unless you were bonded, and would guarantee payment (for me) and guarantee the reservation (for them), it would be more trouble than it's worth.

Good luck!

PS ITA w/Dean: if ever there was something that might get on the "No Commercial Usage" radar, it would be this....

And that's not going to happen.

It was an interesting thought. But, I don't see the venture as workable.

You would not be able to call on behalf of members so the member would still be dealing with you to make the arrangements....probably equivalent to the calls they'd be making with the renter and MS. Profit margin is too small for you and for the owners.

Yep! All valid points and not a very plausable business model. Guess I was thinking way too much late at night :). Really the only service that would be provided is the answering of all the newbie questions about renting, trust, transaction, working up the points, calling MS to check availablitiy etc. I guess if the DVC Owner had like 500 or 600 pts to rent then the service might be a good idea for them because there is a certain amount of time that is necessary to complete each transaction and they would need to do several transactions to get rid of all 500-600 points. Might get old after awhile. Oh well chalk this up an interesting discussion but not a real starter.
