I'm wondering if anyone can give me a quick place to start looking... we are going the week leading up to thanksgiving 2016 with 2 adults, 3 kids who will be 10, 8, and 4. Last time we went our youngest was under 2 so we stayed in ASM one room, for about $160 a night. Now we are 5 so our choices are limited and the prices are higher. Best options right now are Carribbean Beach for about $260 a night or POR for slightly less with the fold down beds for the 5th person. We really wanted AoA but it is $370 a night and we are going for 7 nights.

I see DVC options posted that seem like folks get great deals per night, however I'm thinking for the size we need and the time of year it there aren't as many deals. I also have looked through some photos of places and am wondering which is a good place for young kids to make it feel like a special place too!

Thanks for any insight...

So using this Thanksgiving as an example, an AKL 1BR Standard would be 228 points. Using a rental rate of $12/point you are looking at $2736 for the week. AKL is great for kids, it's fun without going to the parks. It is, however, a bit distant from the parks. To secure Thanksgiving week, you'll need to decide quickly as owner's 11 month booking window is right around Christmas time. Given your number of postings, you may want to consider using David's rental service to secure the reservation. A good overview of the DVC properties can be found here. http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-vacation-club/

ETA: changed example to Standard view including the math.

Except a 1 bedroom value will not allow 5 only 4.

However I agree the 1 bedroom standard views at AKV are good value. For our family we prefer a 2 bedroom for 5 but many use the 1 bedrooms.

If you are okay being on top of each other you can try to rent a studio at GFV, Poly, or VWL - those all hold 5 but it is a tight fit for 5 from what I have experienced- we have never had more than 3 in any of them though. You can also book any 1 bedroom through DVC(except an AKV value villa) though with some of them you will have to provide the bed and bedding for the 5th person. The 1 bedrooms with bed space for 5 include: VGF, BLT, OKW, and AKV(not value).

We have done three adults and two 8 yr olds in a studio at WLV. For 9 nights..no issues. We eat breakfast and some lunches in the room. It is a pain to fold up the table every morning, but we have no issues.

I am not sure whether you can get as low as $260 a night for a week at Thanksgiving time in a DVC room but price can be well below $360 a night.. Understand that you get room only and no daily cleaning service (they empty trash, replensih towels and toiletries on the 4th day). The following have studios that sleep five because they have, in additona to a queen bed and pull-out sofa, pull down Murphy bed from the cabinet in front of the TV; it is a tight fit anywhere but the rooms are all significantly larger than POR, Carribean or AoA: Villas at Wilderness Lodge, Boardwalk Villas, Villas at Grand Floridian, Polynesian Villas, and by next Thanksgiving Beach Club Villas. Grand Floridian and Poly would be the most expensive while the other three are in the same price range unless you can get lucky and get a Boardwalk standard studio. More expensive would be a 1BR and they have those that sleep five at Animal Kingdom villas, Bay Lake Tower, Villas at Grand Floridian, and Old Key West. One bedrooms at other resorts sleep four but you can have 5 as long as you bring your own bedding for the fifth because they will not provide any.

You can check out points needed and prices on the calculators at David's, one the brokers through which owners rent points, dvcrequest.com. Critical for that time of year is for the reservation to be made 11 months out from date of arrival, which is the earliest they can be reserved, because it is a very high DVC demand time and rooms, particularly studios, can disappear quickly once that 11 month window opens.

Your cheapest reasonable options will be 1 BR standard at AKV Kidani and 1 BR OKW. A 2 BR AKV value won't be that much more. Going to the cheaper view 2 BR will also open up other resorts like BWV standard view. Or one could look at off property like Wyndham's bonnet creek and be even cheaper than the value.
