I have a question regarding one time use points. My upcoming trip in January would need an additional 10 points. Is member services a stickler to the 7 month one time points rule. If they are, what would be the likelihood of me finding a transfer of 10 points from a member?

Yes, one time use points are strictly 7 month. Likelihood of finding a transfer is luck of the draw, no way to predict. I think you can only ask for that in the rental forum though.

Actually I meant to say that One time use points are strictly 7 month, not transfer. Transfer points can be used at their home resort before 7 months.

With the one transfer rule per year, and now having to do a three way call with MS, finding someone wanting to transfer just 10 will be difficult. But, MS won't sell you OTU points before 7 months because you don't get a home resort advantage with them....you may want them for VGF and what they might have is OKW to give you...that is why its 7 months or less because they can just transfer to you whatever resort they have in stock that fits your travel time period.

In the scenario you describe, if I subsequently cancel the VGF reservation, could I then use the OKW points for an OKW reservation during the home resort priority period? Can I ask MS for OTU points that are not expiring soon?

There's no way around it. You will not get home resort priority on OTU points at all.

Nope. OTU have no home resort priority to them and you are locked out for using them for trips 7 months or less. OTU points will always expire at the end of the UY of the trip, so that does not change. They set that up to match your own UY. For example, if I wanted some OTU points for my September trip, which is in my Aug UY, they would set it up for those points to expire July 31st, 2023, but I am still limited to using for trips 7 months or less.

It is also the reason why transferred points don't seem to work for booking online and you have to call. It appears they set up the system to make all transferred points (which is really what OTU points are) to be restricted in bookings. Even my own transferred points from one membership to the other can't be booked online until I am 7 months or less from check in.

If I end up not getting OTU but renting from a member, is there a way to combine the two reservations if they are not made by the same member?

It will remain two different reservations. Basically, you would be renting one night from someone else and booking the rest on your own membership. Each of you would then ask MS to note the others reservation number stating they are a continuous stay so they can keep you in the same room. They would mention that is not guaranteed, but I book nights on my different memberships all the time and have yet to have to move.

@nlenguyen Do you already have all but one night booked? If it's a January trip and the night is still available 8 months out, you'll probably get the last night you need at 7 months or by waitlist. I wouldn't sweat it.

You can make a dummy reservation by finding a room currently in the 7 mo window, calling MS to buy 10 OTU points and cancelling the reservation. That way, you have the OTU points available when the 7 mo window opens for your January reservation.

Yes we just need one more night
