DVC nightly exchange help please.

My family bought a small stripped resale at AKL 3 years ago, and since the points would not be available until 2009, we were fine with that as we were not going to Disney until then.

Well best laid plans and all, due to job issues causing financial distress, we went nowhere last year, and banked our points for this year.

This year, our jobs look much much better, but now we have a new puppy, and DH doesn't want to go anywhere if we are gone more than 3 days. Since we are 24 hours from Disney (and we prefer to drive instead of fly), we decided to exchange our banked points for a 3 night stay within 6 hours of our home.

We are looking at early June, and wouldn't you know it, nothing is available near us.

This is my first time trying to book anything with DVC points, so maybe I am doing it wrong, but member services says to keep calling back, maybe I will find something, though I think maybe we waited too long to decide this.

Now I am wondering, with my banked points from 2009, can I use them to book something at AKL the 11 month mark of my 2010 use year, for a 2011 reservation?

So I would book this summer for next year, using my 2009 banked points, and my 2010 points? Can I book a year ahead with banked points?

Sorry if I should know this, I did try and find the info here but I did not see this question answered previously.

Am I just not going to be able to use the points at all?

Sadly, if I understand your situation correctly, no you won't be able to use your points (banked from 2009 into 2010, right?) for a 2011 vacation (unless the dates are within your 2010 use year).

For me, the easiest way to figure this stuff out is to put calendar years out of my mind altogether. The only thing that counts (w/respect to the "live-ness" of points) is use year.

And, your reservation timelines all depend on when the vacation starts, not when you book it.

So, if your reservation dates are within your 2010 use year, you can use your banked 2009 points. If, however, they are in your 2011 use year, you can't.

If it turns out you can't use them yourselves, consider offering them for rent or transfer--and the earlier you do so, the better your chances of finding a "buyer"...that would be better than just a complete loss, don't you think?

Good luck...and pet the new little puppy for us...good for your husband to think it more important to stay close to "the new baby" than to make sure you use your points! (Although I'm sure your puppy will be fine if you do decide to leave him/her...depending on what "babysitting" arrangements you're able to make)...

I think you need to get a house and puppy sitter, and go on your vacation!

What about kenneling the pup at WDW?? This way you wouldn't be leaving it for a long period of time and you could check up on it!

Ok, with DMKEDM's explanation in mind (thank you!), I made an executive decision for my family and booked the Holiday Inn Resort in Lake Geneva, WI, giving up on what my family's "ideal" resort wishes were! I just don't like to gamble, and am afraid that by waiting for our ideal resort, even this one, the only one available, will be gone.

I was thinking of renting my points, but if I reserve something somewhere, we have to go, otherwise DH will have us spending the summer at home since we are not obligated to use points, but darn, I need to get away.

Oh well, since my only visit ever to Lake Geneva was The Sugar Shack for my bachelorette party many years ago, I guess I will see what else this area has to offer for a husband that hates shopping and teen girls that love water and horses! We will enjoy it, no matter what!

Regarding our puppy, we have a fantastic house sitter that lives in our home when we are away, and for us, with the experience we had 8 years ago with out last dog in a kennel, we will not kennel our dogs anymore. Our previous dog was always happiest around her cats and in her home, anyway, and we hope the same for this puppy.

This puppy will be a 6 month old German Shepherd when we plan on vacationing, and we just feel more comfortable slowly getting her used to us not being around, and being in the care of the house sitter. We figure starting with short trips is easier on us, anyway!

Next year, we are using our AKL points at AKL, and I am booking it right when I hit 11 months, because I will not miss out for summer 2011! and DH and the dog will adjust!

You may ALWAYS make a reservation at your Home Resort as early as 11 months before the check-in date you want. But as poster Dmkedm stated depending upon dates when your trip will take place that is what determines which Use Years allotment of points you have available to use for the trip.

Without knowing your UY (month) it is hard for us to tell you if your banked 2009 UY points could be used for a trip taking place during summer of 2011.
If your UY is August or later then it is possible for you to have banked 2009 UY points that will be available to use for some summer 2011 travel dates :

ie, August 2009 UY points banked into August 2010 UY makes them available for trips between
8/1/2010 through 7/31/2011 AND
August 2010 UY allotment of points ("Current"UY) are available to use for trips in this date range, and if needed, MS can borrow points from 2011 UY allotment of points for trip happening from 8/1/2010 - 7/31/11

Sept 2009 UY points banked into Sept 2010 UY makes them available
for trips between
9/1/2010 through 8/31/2011 etc.

Unfortunately you can't wait list short stay requests. And it is late in the game though it's unlikely anything was available 10 months out for that area either. That resort, formerly called Marcus Vacation Club at Grand Geneva, sounds decent. It apparently is on a property that was formerly a playboy club or something similar. It's rated 7.76 on TUG, the recent reviews are fairly positive. I don't think you'll be displeased given your situation..

We originally were hoping for either the Wyndham property in Lake Delton (love those waterslides at their hotel, the Wilderness Resort!) or one on Lake Michigan in Wisconsin or Michigan, but oh well, at least I know for next time! I am sure we will enjoy the resort, and after not going anywhere for a year and a half, I will take any change of scenery!

I might just join TUG again. When we were looking at buying a timeshare, I belonged to TUG then, but never renewed once we made our decision to go with a Disney resale. Guess I will give it another look!
