DVC Members - Can I get a little help RE: "Board Culture"?

how is it perceived that DVC ruining WDW?
There are several factors.

First, DVC resorts are relatively cheap to build, compared to, say, attractions on the scope of an E- or D-ticket. Second, most people (incorrectly) believe that money spent on DVC resort construction necessarily means money that could not be spent on attraction construction. Finally, for every "guest-visible" dollar spent in the theme parks, there are several dollars spent on infrastructure and support mechanisms; the ratio at resorts it the opposite.

Add it all together, and it seems as though DVC is "stealing" money from the theme parks. Most WDW fans---people who pay several hundred dollars for tickets each year but who are not DVC owners---will view that negatively.

The truth behind all of these things is more subtle, but that subtlety is lost on many.

Usually I find lurking to be my best option. Maybe that would work best for the OP as well.

This is mainly why my post total is low. I generally try to limit my posts to factual information so as not to get into the battles of opinions, because sometimes my skin is not so tough.

I did read the OP post that was referred to above and have to admit I mistook the vagabond inference. After reading this thread I get that there was no disparity meant, but my first impression was that it came across in a derogatory way.

This is the problem with electronic media. The words are the only thing that are seen not the intention. And as I am constantly telling my son regarding social media, perception is reality to others reading your posts.

I am only replying because I can easily envision myself unintentionally saying something to offend others, and just wanted to give OP my insight. I hope my ramblings are helpful.

Thanks akl2004 - I wouldn't call that rambling at all :). You've most helpful :).

"Wondering if any other DVC folks have a little insight?"

Are you a DVC member? These are the folks I asked advice of.

Obviously you've annoyed some Disboard members that aren't DVC members, perhaps the advice from a non-DVC owner is exactly what you should most take to heart if you don't want to "generate a fair bit of dislike" in the future. I'm sure that you have the best of intentions but you certainly don't come across as particularly likeable when you flippantly write off someone's opinion because they don't own a DVC contract.

Deb & Bill - could you provide a little more help than "Bazinga" ? I'm not looking for yet another fight.... I'm trying to understand how to provide decent information for others without somehow offending them by being a DVC member. One word "gotchas" are not helping.

I think that the issue is not necessarily with the information that you're trying to provide, it's more with the tone/presentation in which it's being presented (see above).

Yes. Even this thread is putting the blame on "board culture" or "DVC". Neither are to blame for the OP's issues IMO.

Just a quick note here in defense of the OP - the terse reply directed at me by the OP in this thread was in response to the fact that I was one of the posters involved in the original thread in question and I took offense to the wording used (specifically vagabond). I just stumbled upon this thread (I use the "new posts" thing a lot and just go down thru and read what's interesting), and was just hoping to help clarify what caused the issue in the first place but maybe didn't do a great job of that. Perhaps my post could have been a little less direct for what it's worth.

You've only been on the DIS since June. Take some time to read responses that people write. What you write doesn't seem to always convey the thought you seem to be trying to convey. Treat other members with respect. Treat their responses with respect. That's what bugged me about your response to what I wrote on a past thread about VWL. And it really hit me the wrong way. You had one strike in my book. Then on this thread you chose to treat SouthFayetteFan as not eligible to respond to your question and ignored the response. Big ego trip there, Dean. You could have just written it off without commenting on it or responded "thanks for the response".

Some posters will know more than you do about some topics. You may know more than other posters, but you are new here. Earn your stripes.

But, sometimes, "bazinga" just might be the response you deserve.

Something worth mentioning.... having started with the desire to understand board culture....

Even the folks that wish to offer no positive suggestions help me to understand board culture :). Thank you. There is no such thing as a bad experiment - there is only data :). While I might thank those that have taken the time to offer POSITVE suggestions? The negative ones also allow me to understand actual board culture.

HAL? Is that you?

Board culture is not data driven. Most people here are more emotional than that, and as someone apparently driven by data, it would probably be best if you remembered most people on the other end of your posts were human beings with complex emotional states and a variety of experiences, many of whom are far more interested in pixie dust and magic than in data.

I must say that I find this discussion a bit odd. There is no magical formula where you input "data" to generate a comment that will garner a set amount of likes. It just comes down to communicating with people online. It's trickier than speaking with someone face to face as many nuances such as body language, inflection, etc can't be communicated but it's still communication nonetheless. IMO you're putting way too much thought into a board "culture" and you're really overthinking things. As crisi said, it's just people. That's it.

My advice going forward would be to maintain a relatively thick skin. Honestly, this is an online discussion board, not an online agreement board. If some people don't agree with you, so be it. As long as you weren't trolling to deliberately solicit a negative opinion for your own enjoyment, who cares? If you're afraid that your opinion won't be agreed with and praised, then I'm sorry to say that the internet may not be for you.

And since you did ask for other people's opinions, I think that you are getting your panties in a proverbial bunch. YOU asked for feedback, most of which was constructive. Don't feel as though constructive criticism is a "negative" thing, it's the best reaction you could hope for when asking for advice.

Goodness, DeanM wanted some advice from possibly a group that he felt might be able to offer constructive criticism. Sadly that does not seem to be the case but he probably learned a good bit about board culture in the process.

As to his use of data versus opinions, maybe he is a tech guy or an accountant, either way I understood what he meant.

He was not inputting data, he was wanting to know what he did wrong. I guess you needed more background.

But basically this thread showed him that some are very suspicious for no reason, others have a problem with terms, and some tried to help. So I guess he got the data he needed, didn't it.

DeanM if you need anymore help navigating the treacherous waterways of the forums, feel free to private message me. I have been here long enough to have seen it all.
