It's very unfortunate that the PP had a horrible experience with
DCL. I am certainly curious to know what made the experience so lousy.
I've been on three regular cruise and find I am preferring the cruise experience over a regular
DVC vacation in most cases.
I agree with the common thought that using points for DCL (regular or member) cruises will not yield the best value from your points. However, if you have the points to cover a cruise and realize this tradeoff I would say Go For It! I would consider the value of DVC over the life of ownership and not just the per transaction value. It's a personal choice and if it works best for you (i.e. minimal out of pocket expense) that's all that matters.
As others will suggest, an alternative I would consider renting your points and using the cash to pay for your cruise. One other consideration, is if you are booking a member cruise, you will need to pay in full at time of booking (as of my 2009 information).
I have not been on a member cruise, but it's on my bucket list. My opinion is also if you have not been on a regular cruise is to try that first, it would make you appreciate the added magic of the member cruise more. Either way you should have a blast!
Good luck and looking forwarding to hearing what you decide.
