We have recently become members of DVC SS and have just booked our first vacation next Christmas (yay :earsboy: ).

Now here comes the problem....

We were given "the leaflet" to book insurance for our points through Travel Guard. I have just phoned them, and they say because I live in the UK, they can't issue me any insurance....aaaaaahhh.

Can anyone help me find insurance to cover against my points in the same way they would? Is there anyone else out there in the UK or US that will cover me?

Thanks guys
Jacqui

Welcome home!

Also, I hope someone can answer you, if not here, maybe on the UK board, or did you call MS?

Best wishes!!!

Uh-oh....is this a first hidden cost ? I, too, am a new DVC member but I have not signed "at the palm trees" yet.

No one mentioned insurance for the points. Why would you get this ? What does it cost ? What does it protect against ?

:worried:

Thanks,

This is just a leaflet for travel insurance for each individual trip you take. Because you are not actually paying cash, travel insurance to cover your point stay can be more difficult than usual to obtain. As I understand it, the travel insurance pays approximately $5 per point if you need to cancel or are cancelled by a covered event.

I think most of us "self insure". I know we do. We just assume the risk of losing our points if something happens and we have to cancel at the last minute. So far we've been lucky.

If you do decide to buy the insurance, be sure to carefully read what it covers (and doesn't). For example, it doesn't cover a lved one's sudden turn for the worse and/or death - my FIL was ill and in a nursing home and that was primarily what we worried about.

Best wishes -

Like CArol, we don't worry about it. I guess if you are coming all the way from UK, though, it might be important to you. We had only once that we actually considered it. My grandmother was dieing, and we were worried it might interfer with our trip. As it turned out, she passed away two weeks before we left. If you are fairly confident you wont be canceling at the last minute, I wouldn't worry about it.

With a return of around $5 pp, it's definitely not worth it. Just take your chances, you can usually rent out if you have to cancel.

I agree, it sounds like a waste of moolah!

We never bother with it either. Got better things to do with the $! :cool1:

Another vote against insurance. $5/point is a bad rate of return. Unless your stay is just before your points expire for that use year, you are better off to take the risk and rent out the points if need be. JMHO.

Jacqui,
One means of self insurance would be to get accomodations at another hotel for your first night, if you don't mind moving. Then, if the trip falls through at the very last minute, you can still cancel your DVC vacation (as long as you notify Member services 1 day ahead of check in --or, if member services is closed, the DVC where you are staying). Your points will go into holding, but at least they are not totally lost.
