We're planning a trip to NYC this summer to visit friends, see shows, and generally just have fun. If you've been using points, how did you do it? It doesn't seem to be a good use, but then again, we've not ever traded out to do a timeshare exchange...what are your thoughts?
Thanks for the help!

NYC is a place where hotels cost A LOT, so it might indeed be a good use of points.

My recommendation to determine if it is worth it, take how many points it will take for your reservation and multiply by $12, then add the $99 exchange fee. I use $12 since that is what you can, on average, rent your points out for.

For example, say that the stay will cost you 100 points, that would be $1,200, subtract the exchange fee and it would be $1,299.

Now, will paying cash for a room cost more than $1,299? If so, then using points make the most sense, if not, then renting your points out and using the cash may make more sense.

Now, personally I would rather know if my cost is more than paying cash for the hotel, in our case, our points are worth about $5.00 per point, per year. So, in my case, the value would be $599 with the exchange fee for the comparison to 100 points.

The other thing to consider is to compare like rooms, unless you are willing to stay in a two star hotel while there, which most likely wouldn't have a kitchen or anything like that.

Also, don't forget to count things like parking fees, resort fee, wifi fees, etc. that your hotel might charge you when looking at price comparison.

You can trade with RCI for the Manhattan Club thru Disney. The Manhattan club is a Times Square location and a nice timeshare. Nightly rooms usually go for 300-400 a night plus 12% tax. I would recommend it if you can do a tradeout.

I also never did a trade out so I can not help you there. But I would call Member Services and ask how. If you can post what they say, that would be great. I am also thinking of doing a RCI tradeout with the Manhattan Club in the future.

Good LUck.

There are actually two RCI choices in NYC - the Manhattan Club and the Hilton Club, and I checked on both of them today for a possible trip in May. Unfortunately, per Member Services, both are fully booked from now until October, when there is a one-night studio availability at one of them. Seems like they're both popular spots.

Personally, for the amount of points to spend one night in NYC, you could probably spend a week at Old Key West. Keeping that in mind, I just look for special hotel rates in NYC and not use my points there. Again...I haven't done a ton of research on this ... but even in Lake George NY...wow...the amount of points for one night in the Sagamore is just incredible. Just my simple opinion. I don't see the bang for the buck....or rather points.

NYC hotel rooms are far cheaper during the summer, as most people head out of the city (especially on weekends). You can get deals, if you are flexible (probably want to avoid 4th of July).

I booked a room just a few days ago for the weekend of July 20th. I think I paid $239 a night, and we are staying at the W in Midtown, which is pretty nice. I saw plenty of options for that price range, and less. There were nice options for $175-$200. Not sure how trading computes, just thought I'd share a little perspective on the cash options.
