Does anyone worry about what WDW and DVC will be like in 20 years. I think DVC is great and the 4 Disney parks are the most popular parks in the world. We own in one of the best spots in the world. However, given the challanges faced by Disney, I think it maybe tough to maintain this poistion.

Right now, WDW is the place to be but what will it do to DVC if WDW becomes a Disney Land or Conney Island. 40 years ago Conney Island was the place to be, 30 years ago Disney Land was the place to be. Does this worry anyone? Have we bought into a future dinasour? Should people signing 50 year deeds think about this? Or should we just live for the day...

Nope! I say enjoy it now -- and let the future take care of itself!

I have to agree with RuthnPaul "Enjoy it now" Disney World will be around for a long long time. They still have plenty of room to grow and will stay up with the times. They have invested to much money not to be around in 20 years..... JMHO.

What most people do not consider is the changing WDW when buying into DVC. WDW has changed going with thrill rides all over the place. Walt wanted a place that everyone could enjoy, we now have a ride that supplies air bags. The whole placed has changed a great deal in the last 7 or 8 years, it is more a amusement park than what Walt had in mind. People should concern themselves with this situation. Is is no longer the deluxe park it was back in the early 80's with the advent of the value resorts and thrill rides in could very quickly become another Six Flags if it isn't already. I still will enjoy the winter down there however, just plan not to go to the parks. EPCOT was my favorite, now I don't like even going near the place.

Once I hit our breakeven point at year 12 of ownwership (assuming annual 8% opportunity cost and comparing Mods vs DVC in a discounted cash flow analysis), I will have gotten all my money out already, and anything after that will be gravy (and might tasty gravy too, if standards are maintained).

Plus, you can always sell, and get part of your money back that way too.

Remember, it is not an investment; it is simply pre-paid vacation until the end day (2042 or 2054, depending on home resort).

This is exactly how we look at DVC and our Marriott timeshares.

Just yesterday we looked at our future/retirement goals and we are okay with the house, okay with IRAs and have our vacations all taken care of also.

Its wonderful to know that you have future vacations waiting for you! ::yes::

I have to agree that WDW is not the same place. Eisner/Pressler management has destroyed much of the original charm of EPCOT and even Disney MGM. I don't spend much time in their parks either. Luckily, I enjoy Central Florida.

Have you actually been to Disneyland lately??? That park is more crowded on any day than I have EVER seen the MK. I was in DL in mid-April, and we went to the Grand Calif. to eat lunch. I was sitting in the lobby by the BEAUTIFUL fireplace, and began to speak to a woman who was a guest at the hotel. She told me what a great "bargain" they got on rooms. "We're only paying $370.00 per night," she exclaimed. I replied, "That's a bargain?". She said, "Oh yeah. We stayed here the week of Nov. 3rd, and we paid $550.00 per night." I asked if she was in a suite, and she said, "No, just a standard view room." Let me also add that the hotel was completely sold out both times she had stayed there!!!

Disneyland is NOT my favorite place, but if DVC had a timeshare there, I would feel VERY secure in the worth of my interest!!!

Let's not forget that the "powers" that run Disney have a very selfish need to "preserve their empire". Disney is NOT like Coney Island or even Six Flags (with whom I was employed for many years). To compare them is like comparing a tricycle to an 18 wheeler!! Six Flags does not even pay their employees minimum wage, whereas Disney performers are all eligible to gain membership in the elusive "Actor's Equity Assn". Disney Corp. not only writes books on "customer service", but also offers classes to other corporations (something my husband's company...which is one of THE most successful companies in the world) has taken great advantage of.

Is it a gamble?...absolutely. But, I think it is a pretty darn good one!! But, I can guarantee you this...in 2041, ALL interests at VWL, BWV, BCV, OKW, HH and VB WILL be worthless!! So, is it REALLY a gamble? I just paid $35,000 for a van that I can GUARANTEE you will be worthless in a lot fewer years than 38. If someone said to me that I could use my van for 38 years, I'd think that was an AMAZING bargain!! I waste a lot of money in a lot of ways....I would never say that this is one of those ways!!!

Anyway....just my $.02.

We look at ownership not as an investment, and not even as a pre-paid vacation, but as a vacation upgrade. We would still vacation, and would probably spend the same amount as we spend now for maintenance, but would get a mere hotel room. We get more bang for our buck this way.

Disney World is the place to be, sure...

but

it was also the place to be 30 years ago!!!

I always go with the car analogy. DVC costs the same as a good car, but you get to keep it for at least 20 years longer than the car... That's not bad...

You nailed it, Jon! It is a pre-paid vacation at our favorite place to vacation, and we or our offspring have the right to use it until 2042!

What?? Six Flags?? You don't like Epcot now because of Test Track and Mission: Space? That's absurd, what about World Showcase, Innoventions, The Living Sea...etc.??

I don't know how many Six Flags parks you've been to lately Pa, but you must not be paying attention when you visit. WDW is nowhere close to a Six Flags park, and I know because I have one in my backyard.

What do you mean by deluxe park?

The Living Sea is pathetic. Have you been in there recently? Such a waste. I think as the fish die they don't even replace them. There is like two fish in there now? ;)
When I took my Mom last summer we went to Epcot first out of an eight day trip. We were there half the morning and my Mom was like this is really lame, what happened to Epcot? Needless to say we left and didn't go back there the rest of the week except for dinner one night and IllumiNations. It is so far in need of help I'm not sure if they can even fix it. I can only hope.
I still love WDW, but I can see HUGE differences even in the last year. Luckily, we still love MK and AK is just beautiful. MGM will do, but it also needs some help. Epcot they have let go.......
Sorry, JMHO

I will just say that while I do worry about where WDW will be in 20-30 years, I have to admit it is still WORLDS apart from most amusement parks. To compare it to one is awful in my mind. The upkeep, the staff, the rides in general are still far beyond anything I can find locally here (and I have Cedar Point, Kings Island and another which has changed names so many times I cna't remember what it is called now ;)). The coasters don't draw me, but the atmosphere sure does. Even if it does turn into another "Disneyland" I don't mind because I plan on visiting there as well.

And really, I have an inner pull towards Florida... so WDW or not, I would love to continually go there :)

i think the fact that disney has updated the rides in epcot proves why the parks will still be popular in 20 years. it shows that they change with the times.

ITA; that's one of the reason's I'm not worried. But there are some people who don't seem to want WDW to change with the times - they want it to be what they first encountered in the 70's or 80's or 90's. Sure, I miss a few of the old attractions (Mr. Toad ::sniff::, but I'd much rather have ToT, TT and M:S - and just wait until Soarin' opens. I road that at DCA and it is truly what Walt would have wanted.

Is WDW of 2024 going to be like the WDW of today? Heck no - and I for one am glad!
