DVC ?? GV - OKW Nov/Dec 2007

I'm looking for information from anyone experienced with DVC particularily OKW grand villa's.. We will have my extended family 10-11 of us going (tenative dates would be Sun Nov. 25, 2007 - checking out Friday, Nov. 30, 2007), if I'm understanding this correctly, my best shot is to find someone with OKW points willing to rent the 190 points to me. Would I need to have this booked exactly 11 mo's out for best chance, meaning Jan 25, 2007 ?

Also how does the renting points transaction work? Do I pay the DVC owner right away with a money order or pay a deposit and the balance prior to arrival?

Also, is it typical to ask for "references" when renting? That is a lot of money I would be trusting someone to be completely truthful, but I would hope anyone renting points on here would be that honest..

You would need to rent from an OKW member to make sure of your GV. There are more of them at OKW but it would be risky to wait till the 7 month window. I recently rented to someone and because we were only a few months out, I asked for full payment. At 11 months, I believe most people ask for a certain amount up front and then the remainder several months before. We have to be able to cancel reservations 31 days out to get the points back into the same use year without restrictions. This only works for us if our use year isn't almost up. It would be up to the person renting to you, to decide how they wanted it planned. You are right about the trust issue, but this goes for both ways. I only rented points out once because I couldn't use them and it worked for me. I have heard others say they have had trouble. You might check out the rent/trade board and see who rents out the most. I would suspect they are the ones not having trouble either way. Good luck with your GV plans, I hope it works for you. We stay in a GV at OKW every year and they are GREAT!!!

Yes, you will need the 11 month booking window for this one, but it couldn't be completely booked until January 30, because that is 11 months from the day of checkout.

THis reall depends on the individual you rent from. Some require one thing and others something else. Just be sure you understand the individuals contract before you agree.

Yes, it is appropriate to ask for references, and the renter might also ask for references from you since there is much to lose on both sides of the deal should either one renig.

When looking for someone to rent from, pay attention to the amount of posts on this site. While this isn't cast in stone, generally those with many posts will have a history here, and have had many successful rentals. While newbies might well be honest renters, 1 or 2 posts should send up a red flag that you might want to be extra careful.
