Please clear something up for me.

Disney offers a discount for FL residents.

I'm currently paying FL property taxes to own DVC points.

Does that not make me(us) a resident of FL??

Doesn't make sense.

Incorrect. ;) I'm not sure if I remember the exact reasoning, but I believe it's that under FL law, timeshare owners are not recognized as residents of FL. In order to be a FL resident, you have to reside in the state for a certain # of days each year. Somewhere in the big stack of papers we sign when we buy into DVC, it states that the purchase of the timeshare interest does not entitle you to Florida resident status.

Doesn't make sense.

Since it's their ball and their playground, it doesn't really have to make sense. They've just agreed to loan us the ball for a certain percentage of time. Now, with that said, as has been mentioned on this board in numerous threads, there is no reason Disney can't create a DVC AP rate that is equal to the FL resident rate other than economics (profit and supply and demand).

Nice try but I think you have to reside in Florida to be considered a resident...........

Residency is based on a couple of things... The address which you state on your state & federal tax return and you must reside at that address for more than 183 days to be considered a resident of that state. I am sure there is fine print and some loops holes as with any law but that is the basics for what determines residency.

This issue is always in the news around here (Boston) as Massachusetts has VERY high auto insurance rates and taxes in general while bordering New Hampshire which has very LOW insurance rates (and no sales tax). You can figure out peoples thoughts and actions ... so the state of MA started a media campaign on this issue a couple years back which still shows up on the news occasionally as the registry of motor vehicles does frequent "sweeps" and also offers a $$$ reward for turning someone in who resides in Mass and has NH registry plates.

It would be great though if we could claim FL residency from a timeshare ownership...

Remember there are two issues that come into play here. First is who Disney decides to give discounts to. The other is what are the requirements for Florida residency. They are only linked because Disney has chosen to do so. In the DVC POS it specifically states that members are not FL residents. But Disney could say only left handed people get discounts or any other arbitrary criteria if they wished.

It's my understanding that a Florida ID qualifies for the discount. While you do not have to be a qualified resident for this you would need a verified Florida mailing address.. not P.O.Box

So if you can talk Disney into letting you have mail sent to .... fill in the blank.....you're all set. Castle?

Also you can not count the time spent in a timeshare at DVC toward legal Fl residents, for example if stayed in DVC for 1 1/2 months and 5 months lived somewhere else in FL, it would not be the same as someone who lived in FL for 6 1/2 months. I live in CT the thought of becoming a legal FL resident has crossed my mind more than once, as I am sure it has others. We are taxed to death up here in CT.

Disney considers you a Florida resident if you have any one of the following:

Florida driver's license

Florida state-issued ID card (must have Florida address)

Current utility statement with your name and Florida address along with a corresponding picture ID

Florida voter's registration card with corresponding picture ID

A college ID for a Florida college

Florida based Military ID

While some have gotten by with it, a FL only DL does not technically qualify.

Along the same lines of logical fallacy:

God is Love

Love is blind

Therefore God is Blind?

:umbrella:

I just moved to Florida from NH and am also own at OKW. To be a Florida resident, you must register to vote in FL and have a drivers license in FL. We had to give up our NH residency to be considered FL residents. This is not a Disney requirement but a state requirement to prove residency. We also own property in Massachusetts but since we dont vote there or have MA drivers licenses, we are not considered residents of MA. You have to pick ONE state for residency. SORRY.....but I must admit to being very happy to now be able to buy my Florida State resident disney pass. You will just have to move here:sunny: :sunny:

If this argument were valid (which it's not) then Disney would have to give FL resident discounts to ANYONE who owns ANY type of timeshare in ALL of Florida.

Disney could grant us the privileges they grant FL residents. They will never allow us to declare a DVC resort as a permanent residence (it's even in the paperwork). They do not want to run the risk of having "real" people living on Disney property who might demand a "real" government and voting privileges.

I don't know about you all, but I always vote my Walt Disney Company proxies, every year; so I do vote for or against Disney Board members and on various policies.::yes::

Exactly! There are two issues: discounts and residency.

If WDW wanted to offer "Florida Resident and DVC Member Discounts," they could easily do so. But, so far, they have not chosen to.

Residency is defined by where you live, not where you pay property taxes. I could live in an apartment in Chicago, Illinois, and I could own a major office building in Miami, Florida. I would have no property tax bill in Illinois, and I'd have a huge property tax bill in Florida. But I'd still be an Illinois resident only. The only DVC owners who are Florida residents are those who actually reside in Florida.

I am aware that as a DVC owner I am not a FL resident but it would be great if Disney would give us the same discounts they give Fl residents. And yes I know I bought DVC knowing there were no discounts but that doesn't mean I can't wish.;)

This came up at the BWV annual meeting in December. A board member reiterated that DVC membership does not equal FL Residency. However, she admitted that the real issue is ticket discounts for members. She said they are looking at availability of new discounts (don't hold your breath, they say that every year).
