My wife and I have only been DVC Members for a couple years, but we always see all kinds of discounts for people staying elsewhere on property, but why don't they ever offer things for DVC Members? They could do something like stay 5 nights for the points of 4 from time to time.

Your DVC membership IS your discount. Staying on points is way cheaper than staying for cash, that's why we all (well mainly) purchased DVC.

Disney offers discounts for cash customers to fill rooms that would otherwise be empty. DVC doesn't have that issue - the rooms are already filled up - whether you use your points or not, because you've already paid for them.

Those discounts are frequent when they are having a hard time filling the rooms. DVC has no problem filling their rooms. They are already sold out.

If you want to take advantage of these sales, bank your points and use cash instead.

This is the only timeshare we own and have knowledge of. Do other timeshares do promotions like that? Need to be comparing apples to apples.

DVC isn't offering the promotion. Disney is.

If DVC Point Reservations were to receive 5 nights for the points of 4 (a 20% discount), it would basically be the same as DVC illegally overselling the points for that resort by 20%. By law, DVC can not sell more points at a resort than it would take to reserve that resort for a year.

DVC could make other discounts, like free dining, etc. available...but at whose expense? Obviously the resorts are selling pretty well...there is no need for the developer to incur that cost. Someone has to pay for these promotions and in this case it would be DVC members through increased dues.

Anyone ever think about offering DVC members some kind of discount for cash rooms though? I know the overriding thought is DVC members don't pay for cash rooms. But maybe some DVCers would buy cash rooms at a resort not in DVC if they didn't want to use the high collection points (GF, Poly).

Worst case - members buy cash rooms and can't use their points at the DVC resort, which then turns the DVC room availability back to cash reservation capability. Sounds like it could be a win for Disney - rent a cash room to DVC and then rent the DVC room for cash.

Members are welcome to book the discounted cash rooms available to the general public.

I really doubt Disney cash reservations has much interest in making DVCers an even better deal on rooms over the discounts available to the general public, (free dining, stay 4 get 7, etc.) as they seem to be filling the rooms using those discounts.

Like Chuck said, that capability is already there. You just book that cash room through Disney Reservation Center. If you have an AP, you can request an AP rate. Otherwise you book the latest special rate.

It seems that other timeshare systems wind up offering great sales on stays using developer inventory, but DVC doesn't?

The other companies likely have more trouble filling cash rooms than Disney. With DVC developer inventory is used for a lot of things...cash reservations through the regular system, occasional matching "developers points" on direct sales, and contest promotions, like the people that won pre-paid DVC through Funniest Home Videos, etc.
