DVC Discount is better than the new AP discount

I saw on the Resort Board yesterday that the new AP discounts were out for July 5th - Aug 27th so I called CRO since I am paying cash for the weekend during my stay in late July. The AP discount is $75 for a 1BR at OKW which brings the price from $350 to $275 per night. With the DVC discount the cost is $262.50 per night. I realize that I am giving up mousekeeping for those two nights for a savings of $12.50 per night, but I just kept my reservations as is so I am guaranteed that I won't have to change rooms.

Has the DVC discount always been better than the AP discount?

No - for at least the past few years, the AP discounts have been greater than the DVC Member discount. AP discounts have been as high as 40-45%.

JMHO - This year seems to be trending differently - instead of a % discount, the AP discounts have been a flat dollar amount. My impression is that the AP discounts have been coming out later and that they are fewer in number than in years past. It seems to me that tourism has pretty much recovered and park attendance / resort occupancy levels are also up. Disney doesn't have to offer as many (or as deep) discounts to fill the rooms.

It will be interesting to see what kind of rack rate increases there will be for 2006. Our DVC membership sure looks better in this environment.

Best wishes -

I read an article on CNN's web site this morning about Trends in Summer Travel. According to the article, travel is expected to be up this summer, and hotel rates are rising, with discounts for air travel and hotel more scarce. Disney may well be seeing the same trend, and may therefore be backing off from some of the big discounts that have been available in previous years. As Carol says, if these trends continue, our DVC investment will look even better than ever.

With the AP rates not nearly as good as they used to be, it sure makes me glad I bought into DVC when I did (last December).

I also called about the AP discount on VWL studio for August.
Was told it would be $5 less to use AP than DVC discount. We're staying w/the DVC discount and hoping for the wknd wont need to change rooms.

This will be my last trip staying in a non-DVC resort. The discounts are disappearing rapidly for AP and regular. I'm so glad we bought into DVC when we did. :cheer2:

If you booked through MS with the DVC discount then you will definitely not have to change rooms.

And you won't even have to go down to the front desk between the points and cash stays to check out and then back in again (and get new keys). As far as the resort is concerned, your linked points and cash reservations look like one single reservation. That's a big advantage to booking the cash portion of your stay via MS.

So when can you make your cash reservation? Is it at the same time you make your DVC request?? How offen is this available???

TIA!
Sue

Thsi may be the straw that breaks my DH's Back and goes along with a dvc purchase!!!

The last 2 years a 1 bedroom at OKW in May was about $20 cheaper with an AP rate vs member discount. This May with the $100 flat discount, it was about even. I booked the member discount to have a seemless stay.

They will only book the member discount if they anticipate that the room will not be reserved with points. I'm sure they look at historical occupancies. Friday and Saturdays are easier since members tend to book those nights less.

Im planning a solo trip and "rented" a preferred studio @ BWV, Sept, Fri-Tues, 68 pts., $680.00..or.. $170. per night.

$1311.+ through MS. Can't imagine my AP would be any cheaper?? :confused3

I certainly think that's better than paying cash!! Saving my pts. for a blowout in '06!! :goodvibes

New to this section of the Dis threads. What does "giving up Mousekeeping" refer to? I was told by a vacation club member that you get daily mousekeeping services with no additional charges.

Thanks for the info. We are thinking of buying a resell.

THE DVC member who told you that is misinformed.

You do not get daily housekeeping service when your stay at a DVC resort is paid for with points. (You do get daily housekeeping if you reserve through CRO and pay cash).

Unless your points stay is 8 nights or longer, all you will receive is a "Trash & Towel" service on Day 4 of your stay - check in day is considered Day 1. T & T is pretty much just that - housekeeping empties your trash and replaces your towels with fresh ones.

You can pay extra for daily housekeeping if you want to - the amount depends on the size of your unit. For example, the charge for daily housekeeping for a studio is $25/ day requested.
