DVC Direct: How to get previous year/maximum points?

I am looking at buying VGF2: I will be splitting a 250-300 point purchase into 2 contracts just in case I need to sell one. I have 2 questions.
1. I have read on here a couple times about getting the previous years points? I am wondering how to maximize the points I can get when buying direct.
2. I have also read on here about booking "your home" trip/ first trip when you purchase. I have read that sometimes they get you into previously sold out dates. Is this true? Do they just use the points your are buying to book or are there other incentives?
Let me know, thanks...

1. You get prior year points when you buy prior to the end of your use year. For instance, if you have an Oct UY and bought today, you would receive Oct 2021 points (that expire on Sep 30th). They would also allow you to bank those points even though it was past the deadline. It's a moot point for VGF2, however, because they are not providing 2021 points under any circumstances. You would have to buy a different home resort.
2. True, but you are using your points and they only offer this if you haven't booked anything yourself.

The “double points” is really nothing more than buying later in a UY. For example, I have an Aug UY and I were to buy RIV direct, I’d get my 2021 UY points because my Aug 2022 UY doesn’t start until August 1st.

So, I am getting what I am supposed to get, but because of the timing, its like getting double

But, with VGF, points start with the 2022 UY since BPK wasn’t open in 2021.

Yes, DVC will help with your first booking when you buy direct and may be able to get you a room. It may not be the exact resort you want…they can’t give you an AK CL room if those are booked by owners, but they can pull from rooms in their own inventory.

Your own points are used for this trip, but you do get access. The purpose is to help you understand the booking process and for people who are buying less than 11 months in…especially if less than 7 months…and have missed the start of the booking windows

They are not giving the previous UY when you purchase VGF2. They are only giving 2022 points. Usually, and as is the case with RIV right now, you would get your current UY's points. Anyone purchasing an August, September, October or December UY at RIV would get all of their 2021 points plus their 2022 points on the first day starting their respective UY. VGF2 isn't doing that.

Member Services can sometimes get you nights at your home resort for your Welcome Home trip when they appear to be unavailable but that's not guaranteed. They cannot take rooms away from other members to give new members what they want. If the resort hasn't been fully declared into DVC inventory (like RIV), you stand a better chance because they can sometimes use developer inventory to accommodate you. When a resort is fully declared (like VGF), there is no developer inventory to draw from.

Thank you so much! Exactly what I wanted to know. I love the DIS boards

One more thing, which doesn't apply to VGF currently but does to RIV, when you receive the current UY's points when buying direct your dues for the current year will be pro-rated based on the number of months remaining in the calendar year. You won't be charged for the dues when you close. The bill comes later and can be a surprise to new owners.

If I sign this month (July) and I bought a DEC Riviera contract I'll be getting a bill for 50% of the year for 2022 points?

Edit - for the OP. I got all of the 2021 points when I bought this contract and had to bank them soon as the banking window ends at the end of this month. I also decided a few days after our first sit down with our guide to increase the size of the contract which reset the points and they had to be banked again. Hope this helps.

You would get a bill for 6 months of 2021 points. Today (July 10, 2022) falls in the December 2021 UY. It's not a bill for 50% of the points. It's a bill for 6 months of the dues on all of your points. It ends up being the same amount. It's just the semantics. But someone buying in September would pay 2021 dues for all of their points for 4 months, so it's important to make the distinction.

VGF2 is a new allotment of points created in 2022.
2021 (previous year) points do not exist for VGF2

Thanks. This is helpful.

For clarification: when buying direct from DVD, dues are assessed and paid based on calendar year, not UY. Someone who buys in July 2022 will be assessed approximately 50% of CY 2022 dues (prorated based on actual purchase date). The amount of dues owed would be the same for someone who bought a September UY and is in their 2021 UY and for someone who bought a June UY and is in their 2022 UY.

Payment for dues based on UY of points obtained is often a factor in resale price negotiations, but UY has no bearing on dues owed when buying direct.

Dues are based in calendar year and not on points per se.

Anyone buying today will get billed the same amount for 2022 MFs for RIV, regardless of UY and regardless of the points you get.

So someone with a June UY gets 2022 points to start because that is the current UY for June. Dec UY get 2021 and 2022 points because we are still in Dec 2021 UY.

However, since dues are for the operation of the resort for the current calendar year , and you are becoming an owner today, you are charged dues from today.

Indeed, i have a one December UY Contract and feels weird to pay dues way before the UY starts but that's how it is.

One of the very rare advantages of a late UY. Buy and bank a Dec UY contract on Nov 30 and only pay 1 month of prorated dues for the calendar year’s points.
