DVC Coffee Snob Thread (non snobs welcome too)

Coffee seems to be an achilles heel for disney (for me at least), Joffreys is convenient but horrible, Starbucks I can find something decent but super inconvenient, do not want to wait on more long lines when in a theme park. I drink the coffee in the rooms, but have to use multiple creamers and bought water. Last time I was at the Swan I was surprised to find that their tap water in the rooms must have been filtered because it was fine, not in any disney hotel, I can barely brush my teeth with it without gagging. Its not like I haven't tried to find a tolerable Joffrey’s coffee, started with regular brew, tried upping the game to americano/espresso, tried the iced coffees regular and specialty, without exception these have ended up in the trash after a few sips, I guess I’m a slow learner! I hate that Disney is committed to Joffreys and honestly don’t know how they became a successful coffee business, do they exist outside the parks? Sorry for the rant, but this is one of my few pet peeves with disney. I need my rope drop coffee!

I’m a coffee snob, but in the reverse of most people’s coffee snobbery. I do not enjoy the (to me) burnt-tasting dark roast coffee that is the standard brewed coffee across most of the US. I have to load it up with a ton of milk and sugar to choke it down. I much prefer smoother light roasts, but they’re hard to find in restaurants or coffee shops. On vacation, I will take a caffeine pill in the morning if my only coffee option is going to be a Starbucks. It’s one of the reasons a coffee maker and fridge is on my preferred list of amenities for any hotel room, so I can bring or buy supplies to make my own coffee of choice rather than have to attempt to forage for it.

I'm pretty similar...only light roasts for me.

On top that, I'm adamant about not going anywhere for daily morning coffee, so even if there were good, speciality coffee shops in the area I wouldn't go there anyway.

I've thought about traveling with a V60, BIRD, or Pulsar to brew, but then I'd also need a grinder and it's just too much hassle. So instead I don't drink coffee on vacation, I drink a combo of caffeinated Liquid IV and Diet Coke.

One time I brought Cometeer pods and a portable kettle to VDH (which is less than a day's drive and only a 4 night stay) and that worked pretty well. But for longer trips to WDW/AUL/DCL I don't think it would work as well.

It's funny - even as I became a coffee snob, buying and grinding my own beans from various growing regions, I never became so much of a coffee snob that I refuse to drink mass market coffee. I still make a cup of morning coffee when I get to my office, which is just Folger's. I can drink free coffee offered at a car dealership service waiting room with powdered creamer. I can go to a breakfast joint and just get a cup of whatever-joe-they-make. And I can drink all the Joffrey's stuff around Disney. So I'm not a full snob - I can drink almost any coffee and if my choice was bad coffee or no coffee, I'll take the bad. But when I have the opportunity to select a great bean, or a great roast I will, and at home I will always be grinding my own beans with a selection of 3-5 different beans available at any one time!

How are the malasadas? My "go to" standard is Tex's on the Big Island, but I haven't been to Leonard's on Oahu yet---that will be on the agenda for this summer when I am in Waikiki.

When they are warm and fresh everyone is quite happy with them. No filling, though.

How much are the malasadas? I usually travel with gluten free people so I've never tried them. I've been watching Ordinary Adventures Hawaii stuff lately and it makes me want to try some. Problem is, I'd probably buy a couple flavors to try and throw out since I don't have anyone to share them with.

I don't know, that sounds like a DQ to me. I mean I know the Portugese originals do not have filling, but this is Hawaii!

I don't consider my self a coffee snob in any way, but I totally agree. There certainly is "better" and "worse" coffee, but there is no coffee that I feel that I wouldn't drink or am too snobby to drink.

They are really good and right on Aulani property. To me it’s part of the DVC coffee experience.

Agree! My BIL makes a fantastic pot of good old Maxwell House. Tastes better than a lot of coffee shop specialty coffees. Never seems to taste the same when I've tried to make it.

I was going to ask how this was possible since it seems like they are everywhere, but then it occurs to me that my closest Starbucks is not all that close either. Several other (and much better) options are closer.

On the other hand, there has been an explosion of Yemeni places over the last several years around these parts.

We have some local spots, but unfortunately although I love good coffee I love convenience more. Being able to order in the app pull up, hop out, and get my coffee is so nice. On weekends do go to one local spot with its inconvenient parking and long lines. Not to giveaway where I live but you can get a fancy soda on every single corner but not fancy coffee.
