DVC Annual Pass Discount going away?

I see discounted APs as a bonus and never as something that is expected.
We have always bought them, but we would keep going if we had to pay full price.
I am not a fan of the 4 park/4 day pass......we usually go for 2 weeks at a time, so I would just buy an AP anyway.
But I do have one set of vouchers put away. I may see about adding a few more so we will be covered for awhile.

I believe that early when DVC was first started, free annual passes where included with a membership purchase. That perk ended and we all still bought.

No different now if the AP discount perk were to end. Some might sell their contract to fresh buyers and new owners will still buy.

A perk is a perk and we are reminded of that fact often with DVC for a reason, they can change the perks at anytime.

It wasn't annual passes. They were Length of Stay passes for half of the capacity of your room. So if you stayed in a studio or 1 bedroom you got 2, 2 bedroom you got 4, grand villa you got 6. It was for the number of nights you were staying. So if you were there 5 nights your ticket was for 5 days. Which meant dropping a day if you wanted to go for 6 days in the parks.

It wasn't a perk. It was a sales incentive. It was clear upfront that the passes ended 12/31/99. This sales incentive ended around 1996, before BWV opened. So only OKW, HH and VB members who bought before then got it. There was a big rush on reservations at the end of 1999 so those members could get one last trip with the free passes.

That really doesn't say anything, just that there will be some ticket discount. The 4 day/4 park ticket would fall into that category. Why post something cryptic like that.

If they are ending it, I wish they would just say it now that rumors are out. I'm hoping Giant Eagle will have a double fuel perks on gift cards for Thanksgiving, I'll buy a $500 gift card and then call to buy an AP.

Yeah, that's what I thought, that makes it sound like the 4 day pass discount is going to replace the AP discount.

Does DVC News have inside info or are they just speculating?

I don't see the purpose of that tweet, just fueling the speculation.

It was only for OKW and VB owners while staying at OKW. It actually ended before HH or BWV opened in 1996 so early buyers at those resorts were never included.

The original intent was to include stays using points thru the 1999 Use Year ending on 12/31/99 - but DVD legal messed up the language in the incentive and ended up also allowing OKW/VB owners to borrow points from their 2000 UY for stays thru 12/31/99. Resale purchasers were also included in the incentive even though they did not purchase directly through DVD.

The LOS passes were good at MK, EPCOT and DHS but not at AK since that park was not in existence before the incentive ended opening on Earth Day in 1998.

I posted in this thread a few pages back and said I was torn on how I feel about this rumor. I said that we'd be spending less time in WDW parks if this rumor was true...but we could make the 4day/4park deal work if that's all they offered.

Here's the thing. Yes, we didn't consider the discounted AP deal as a big factor when we first bought DVC in 2006. We didn't buy an AP for a few years. BUT we only did 1 WDW trip a year and we bought 5 day hoppers (wanna say $300-ish). We'd do a week long trip with 2 non-park days. We began adding on points once we began buying the AP/PAP...with them we'd do several trips (like 3) for 14 days total and hit the parks every day...2 parks a day most of the time...eating a TS meal 1-2 times a day (more so 2 times a day as of late). Like others have mentioned, we don't feel the need to go into a park and conquer it ALL in 1 day since we go so often. We can do very little but we always spend tons of money on dining (DH and I just went for 3 nights and spent $700+ at WDW alone...not counting airfare or parking at airport).

The 4day/4park thing doesn't work for us. I see they have to be used within 14 days of 1st use and you CANNOT repeat parks. We will not buy 4 or 5 day hoppers 3 times a year. We could do 2 trips and get the 4day/4park thing but we prefer to be in Epcot nearly every day and it would stink for us to have to do all 4 parks and not get into Epcot more. We could do 1 trip and get the 5 day hopper but we would NOT do that twice in a year (not at $388 a pop...like another poster said, we can do about $500/year for ticketing...that's our threshold). We might sell some points or rent them. We would do 1 WDW trip and 1 HHI trip each year and go back to cruising. We'd also spend a lot more time at US. WDW would lose OUR money. Sure, someone will buy our pints and fill our DVC room...but will they be folks who spend like we do...will they be once a year families or 3 times a year like us????? Will points keep selling like they are as the multiple trips a year folks stop going multiple times a year...will DVC be able to sell so many to once a year families (which I would think would be the new buyer and not existing add on buyers)????

Yeah, not happy to lose the AP discount...unless they offer the special PAP deal every year-year and a half. We have added on 2 contracts every year since 2012 (6 add ons to our original that we bought in 2006) and was looking to continue. We will put a freeze on our addonitis for now.

ETA: after looking at point charts, this is what I'd do: book a (just 1 per year) 10 night stay for F&W or F&G in a 1BR. We'd likely get the 4day/4park deal and then go to US for 2 days. We'd eat at US and off site (eat at the WDW parks the 4 days we go). That would eat up most of our points (if we went in Jan, we could do maybe 14 nights). We'd also do 5 nights in a 1BR at HHI in early June or Sept. I'd think this will save us some money and maybe give us some new experiences (we have only been to US twice and have never really eaten off site). Jeesh, this thing has me kinda fixated.

Not sure what the point is in only having a 4 day park discount, no hopping pass for DVD members. If I do not get an annual pass discount I will start spending more time at resort, cooking my own meals. Will also take just one trip per year or two verses 2 or 3 trips per year. The one longer trip I will visit other non-disney parks and beaches that I avoided since I had that annual pass discount.

DVC will end up being a much more affordable trip. Maybe I will pay the price for the annual once again after I retire n about 14 years.

I am now thinking I may not add more points.

We don't know why Disney does what they do other than working to increase profits.

Was the PAP a test? I would guess that most members didn't need the premium but they may have purchased it anyway.

Is the ticket discount a test?

Have the number of DVC Discounted AP sales decreased?

Does DVC have a minimum purchase requirement?

Do they intend to rotate different discount offers to increase sales?

There is a reason for everything Disney does and they know us better than we do.

Maybe they are trying to get DVC'ers out of the parks.....

Do you think they will also get rid of the FL residents discounted AP as well? If DVC loses the discount FL residents should too.

Nope, Florida residents vote those Disney-friendly state officials into office. They won't lose their discount.

Their goal is to increase revenue, not decrease it. If AP sales to DVC have decreased, they might offer a different discount to spur AP sales.

Take the discount away.
Some members are unhappy but buy other tickets.
Offer the discounted AP again a year later and members buy years worth of certificates just in case they take away the discount again.

A few years ago we bought enough tickets and certificates to last us for the next 10 years before the price increases.

I've got a couple of years worth of tickets, but not annual passes. After the PAP deal, it became harder to consider paying a higher price for an AP.

I agree! We bought the $399 PAP and it was great to be able to come and go from the parks plus hit the water parks for a few days :thumbsup2

If this rumor is true, then we won't be buying annual passes any more and we'll probably cut down to just one trip a year to Orlando. We will also sell off some DVC points, No need to own as many as we do if this rumor is true.

Because they do not want you to able to avoid annual price increases.

I understand what you're saying but that's money and interest left on the table for the hundreds that would do this. The advantage of being able to use that money up to 12 months-1 day has got to far outweigh the advantage of maybe (or maybe NOT) getting that renewal after a minimal increase.

Just sayin'. :)

I forgot you can't even buy the "no expiration" option anymore (which was ridiculously overpriced to begin with but that's another thread). This stinks to high heaven. There's no way this is going to happen. If it does, they are way stupider than I had even grown to give them credit for.

Are you sure you can't get this anymore? I thought it was still available just expensive..

We have a pile of no expire tix and try to take advantage of run disney tix and yes tix when we go. For us - while we do typically hop - the 4 day 4 park tix may work - with us supplementing a day or two from our no expire - but we have no trips planned the first half of the year to test them out.

I think that a more reasonable solution here is that the discount is reduced back to the 100$ off value...they want to sell the TIW and APs to DVCers to keep them in the parks...

Disneys marketing this year is without a doubt trying to get people into all of the parks - watching the commercials on disney channel can confirm this anyday...it makes sense that they want DVCers to go to all of them too! And soon - with AK updated - we won't even be mad about that!
