Hello everyone,

Questions about DVC Add-On vs One-Time Use Only… my home resort is Animal Kingdom Lodge but I want to go to Aulani next July and was thinking of buying one time use points however I noticed that doesn’t give you home resort priority … if I buy DVC Add-On for Aulani, is it then like a mini contract and I can use it as a home resort so I can use both my new Aulani points and my Animal Kingdom points to secure my stay?

Also if the Add-On option works, how is it different from a One-Time Use Only? From what I’ve seen Add-On I need a minimum of 25pts for $217 each… so then would I pay around $5000 for those points now and every year I have to pay that to maintain that contract?

This is my first time doing this but I’m interested in it because I’m planning a huge Hawaii trip in July for a milestone birthday and I really want to make sure I’ll be able to secure the stay (looking at a Deluxe Studio Ocean View for 10 days mid-end July)

Thank you so much

You shouldn’t have an issue booking an ocean view studio in July at the 7 month window so if you can bank and borrow then it shouldn’t be an issue with your existing contract. If you need extra points then I would just buy a small front loaded 50 point SSV contract for the cheaper dues, unless you can find a subsidized. If you plan on making Hawaii a routine thing then sure but for a milestone trip I would likely pass on owning there atm.

One Time Use Points are only available for new reservations starting at the 7 month point, hence they can be used at all resorts. They expire at the end of your Use Year. Very helpful if you don;t mind limited resort selection at the 7 month point, and need a few more points (max 24). They can be a pricey option.

Add-On points are an option if you need that many points year over year and don;t mind paying premium and yearly MF's.

An alternative would be finding someone to transfer you the necessary points, which would again expire at the end of the points Use Year. However this option is like finding the elusive points unicorn.

Aulani points can be used during the home resort priority period for Aulani stays. You AKV points can be used at Aulani only after the 7 month window opens.

If you buy a 25 point add-on contract for Aulani, you would pay the initial cost (you estimated $5,000) and then every year you would pay the annual dues for the25 points you purchased (not the $5,000). The 2023 annual dues for Aulani are $9.1424 per point. For a 25 point contract, the 2023, dues would be $228.56 For the year you purchase, the dues would be prorated from the date you sign the purchase agreement through the end of 2023.

To add, you can only buy up to 24 OTU points for a trip…so they really for those who are booking a trip at 7 months and are just a few points short.

Adding on gives you the points for the life of the contract and to use year after year at 7 months to go with your AKV points.

Just to be clear, if you buy 25 Aulani points you can use the 25 current use year points + any prior use year points you banked + borrowed next use year points for a total of up to 75 points to book Aulani at 11 months. You cannot use your existing AKV points at Aulani until your 7 month window opens up - the fact that you own points at Aulani won’t change when you can use your AKV points to book there.
If you’re thinking of paying $5,000 just for one reservation + MFs thereafter, personally I’d just reserve what I wanted for cash to be sure I had a reservation & then grab what I wanted at 7 months w/ my AKV points & cancel the cash reservation. OTH if you’d be returning to Aulani every couple of years, that’s different, although personally I prefer other islands.
