Does anyone know if there is any duty on fabric? I'm heading down to the US tomorrow to see about purchasing some Disney fabric.

I am not sure if there is duty on Fabric or not. Might depend on where it is made. (NAFTA should apply if made in North America.) I do know that you will be charged the GST and PST on the value in Canadian dollars if you are over your spending limits.

Someone might have more knowledge of NAFTA on here.

I have found that if you are just going over for the afternoon if you stick to under $100 you might not have to pay anything. It depends on the day. But now with black friday I bet they are pulling everyone in. If you can I would wait a bit.

Sunday is the only day my sisters and mom can go.

We would have to wait another 3 weeks before we could go on a Sunday again. My BIL is able to watch his kids when he is home-goes to work every 2 weeks and the other sister and mom work on Saturdays.

I won't be spending that much on fabric. That's the only thing I want. One sister is looking for materity wear. The other one is checking out the Angel Care Monitors. I have know idea what my mom is looking for.

Are you buying a lot of fabric? Fabric might just happen to look a lot like a blanket... that you might have already had in the car before even going over the border... :rolleyes1

No, not a lot. It will of course depend on the price. Up here it's about $8 a metre.

We just don't have much Disney Fabric up here-Walmart carries a few prints. I have been on the Disboutique Board and there are a lot of Disney prints available down in the US.

I did ask at our Fabricland, they said it's too expensive for them to carry anymore.

I did see a christmas mickey print a while back, but I didn't need christmas fabric.

Just came back last night and had a 2 hour wait to cross the border. They were pulling everyone in:rolleyes1

I was in Buffalo shopping on Saturday, left at 9pm and headed to the Lewiston border, it was backed up on the highway. I called my dh to check the wait times, he told me Lewiston was 2 hours, Rainbow 1 hour and Peace bridge no delay. I got off the highway and headed south to the Peace bridge. When I got there, it was about a 15 minute wait and it seemed like they were just letting people through. I wasn't even asked how much I spent. I was very happy. I have always declared everything I buy and less than half the time I've given the slip to pay, and even then it was only the taxes, I have never been charged duty.

I went over for Black Friday and brought back $200 and then went over yesterday morning and brought back $185 and both times didn't get pulled in. Yesterday I did bring my son (who is 4) with me but Friday it was just my girlfriends and I and we each spent about that much. Not sure what kinds of fabric stores you have there (I live in Ontario in a boarder city) but Hobby Lobby and Joann Fabrics had tons of Disney fabric. My city literally has no crafts stores. I think we have 1 and it is so small and expensive so I go over quite a bit.

Also the wait to go over and come back both times wasn't bad at all. Maybe 10-20 mins each time. Mind you Friday we left at 8:30 am (missing the 4 am rush) and yesterday was 8 am.

There is no way to determine where the fabric was made, so generally it's considered "made in the US" for simplicity.

Just GST & PST.

Don't ask me how I know this. ;)

We didn't have to go in and pay!

We had spent about $300 between 4 adults.

The prices are better down in the US. Walmart had more Disney fabric than our Walmart and it was a lot cheaper. JoAnn had a sale on the Halloween and Christmas Disney fabric the rest wasn't on sale. I filled out the card so I should get e-mails or mailings of sales.

The lady cutting the fabric tried to over charge me. She also cut my Halloween print at 2.3 yards when I asked for 2.6 and she had it on the receipt at 2.6 yard. I wouldn't have caught that until much later, but luckly I noticed there was a problem with the Christmas print as I only asked for 1 yard of it and it was almost the same price as the Halloween fabric (when I got 2.6 yards or so I thought). So I'm not to impressed with the person cutting. The total for the fabric before tax was $23+ and then when it was adjusted by someone who knows what she's doing it dropped to under $17 (It was $17+ with tax).

I spent alot of time at Joanne's when decorating our house, and I also noticed they cutting ladies are not at all friendly. I'd find maybe 1 nice one out of 4 bad-mood ladies.

But I do loooove Joannes! They have the best scrapbook paper, too!

As has already been said, you won't be charged duty. You just will be charged taxes, if you spend more than your $20/person limit.
