Ok, so this is the first time we've flown indirect (NWA via Detroit), but what is the situation with duty free? If we buy on the way out from Heathrow, are we going to have to then put it in our bags at Detroit for onward to Orlando? Dh usually buys a bottle of Jack Daniels at Heathrow which is fine wen flying direct, but not sure what the indirect situation is as it is a liquid & know everyone is still touchy on this subject

TIA all you indirect experts!

he won't be able to carry it onboard from detroit to orlando....
i would pass on buying the jack daniels...

when are you flying? will the NWA / delta merger affect your flight?

Cheaper, larger (and much more choice of JD blends) if you buy the JD in a spirit shop in Florida.

Ok, I'll let him know! We always hit the shops on our first morning, so I'll add it to the list - not sure I've ever been to a spirit shop, where is the closest and/or best?. In the past have bought spirits with us & just bought beer at Walmart. Flying in August. LHR to Detroit is a Delta flight, but from there to Orlando is still showing as a NWA flight

Hi,
we flew back to Heathrow via Detroit last week. We didnt bother looking for alcohol on the way out but on the way back we picked up a bottle of Jack D in Detroit. Its a whopping 1,75 litre bottle for the price of $35 dollars!! We're not huge drinkers, (Honest!!) but we were in Orlando last September and that same bottle was still going strong around Christmas. (if I remember rightly it was a couple of dollars more expensive where we bought it in Sandford Airport last time!)
If you want spirits (or hard liqour as the Americans call it:rotfl:) call into the A B C which also has loads of great stuff) I dont know where you are staying but there are lots of them about. We were in Lake Buena Vista!
Have a great trip
Mandy

You can buy the duty free, but you will have to stow it in your suitcase when you arrive at your first port of call. Its a bit of a pain, but can be done. You take the risk yourself if it breaks in your case.;)

that's good - if you're on delta across the atlantic, then nothing will change..
supposedly nothing is supposed to change with either of the airlines, but i've never trusted an airline and i won't start now...
but you're good....neither of your flights will change...
and detroit airport is ok for plane changes....pretty easy to get around (it's just one long terminal...you really can't get lost if you try)...

as for delta/nwa, they're one airline now....delta (delta bought NWA)....the NWA brand is slowly disappearing... however, for now, they're still operating as 2 airlines (though that will end over time)..
as much as i hated northworst, it kills me to see NWA going away...
and as much as i hated northworst, delta is much much worse on the ground and there isn't even a good nickname to stick on them...

anyway, all airlines suck....too bad it's the only way to get around

Each to their own.
We fly three or four times a year with Delta, usually from Gatwick to Atlanta and then down to Tampa. We have always found them very good both in the air and on the ground.
Next trip, August, the LGW to ATL leg will be on a North West plane so it will be interesting to compare and contrast with the normal Delta flights.

it's Northwest - one word, not two...not that it matters, as it's not going to exist in any case...

in the good old days when air travel wasn't the equivalent of riding the bus, it was called northwest orient airlines (and i rode it back and forth to tokyo even more than you do delta)....but those glory days are over...gone the way of pan am and twa.....time marches on....

it will be interesting to see what the merger ultimately means for domestic ticket prices.....even less competition....NWA was notorious for outrageous pricing on routes they owned.... i wonder what will happen now that competition by definition must have decreased...

and one wonders, who will be next in line to merge..

We're going at Christmas with KLM/ NWA/ Delta from LHR to Tampa via Detroit. We've got 90 odd minutes at Detroit, will this be enough? We've found a bar where we can nip in for a 'ciggy' (I did put something else, but the filter blocked it:lmao:), so we won't have to go outside (thank God, it's going to be freezing), but how long is ACTUALLY needed to get from arrivals to departures as we're not sure if we have to check-in for the onward flight.

We don't really care on the way back and if we're stranded for a few hours or a few days we won't really mind as it's only back to work anyway;)

Sorry to hijack the thread, but it seems that there are a few people on here that have done the trip before:thumbsup2
