Anyone do much cooking with dutch ovens? I have two that are hardly ever used and would like to change that. I am thinking jambalaya might do well in a dutch oven, but do not have a recipe for it. Any other good meals / recipes that work for you?

Bill,

I am on old Boy Scout Camper and when we car camp the dutch ovens are handy. I tend to make more desserts in them a cobbler or a cake than main dishes.

That being said, I have spent 13 years in Scouts with my sons and I am more into backpacking/dehydrated meals in that regard. I lead many of my
Troop's backpackging trips preparing for High Adventure. Backpacking and a dutch oven don't mix. I only have about three good recipes. That being said, I hope my youngest son finishes his Eagle Scout project and releases me from the treadmill I've been on all this time.

I can't offer much more than this. Sorry, man.

Hi Bill, We cook almost everything in Dutch Ovens when we go camping. My favorite being breakfast.

In a 12" dutch oven Ill put about 2" of cooked potatoes on the bottom. Pound each of cooked bacon, ham and sausage. A green pepper and an onion. Pour about 18 eggs scrambled over the meat. And a bag of cheddar cheese on top. Cook with 10 charcoal briquettes on the bottom and 18 on the top for about an hour maybe more until the eggs are set.

Another good one is in a 12" cut about 8 english muffins in half and about 16 pieces of canadian bacon in half. Place them round side up alternating muffin and canadian bacon kind of like shingles. In a large bowl mix a dozen eggs, a cup of sour cream, 2 cups of milk, 2 table spoons of Dijon mustard, 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese. I like to splash a little hot sauce in there too but it depends if you like a little kick or not. Cook 10 charcoal briquettes under and 18 on top 45 minutes to an hour. About 15 minutes before its done put the rest of the package of cheese on top of the eggs.

We'll put a layer of refridgerated canned bisquit dough on the bottom of an oiled 12" and place cooked scrambled eggs, green pepper, onion, and a package of cheddar cheese. 10 bottom 12-14 top for about 30 minutes. Makes an awesome breakfast pizza.

Dinners are endless. I love this mexican chicken ring we make. I've made deep dish chicago style pizza. Dr Pepper ribs are good. Mexican lasagna. Corn bread as a side cooked in a dutch oven is the best.

Desserts are endless too. Cherry dump cake is our favorite. So is pineapple upside down cake. Monkey bread.

I could go on forever with recipes. I love cooking with dutch ovens. Food is always good and clean up is easy. Hot water and a plastic scraper is all you need. Google Camp dutch oven recipes and tons will come up. PapaDutch.com is good so is DutchOvenMadness.com so is DutchOvenDude.com

Hope this helps

Dutch Oven for the Holidayz !
This has always been one of my favorites.

Heres what you need,,

Beans,,lots of them

Bed

Heavy Blankets

Recipe:
Eat LOTS of beans at Dinner time. Once the beans have had time to digest and simmer in your belly real well,(hope this is close to bed time),,you and spouse retire to sleep for the night.
Just about the time your unsuspecting spouse in in that "not awake, not asleep" state,,
you grab the heavy blanket firmly and yank it up over your spouses head at the same time you are blowing off loud obnoxious gases fumes. Be sure to try and hold the blanket down firmly over your spouses head for full effect. And this is the Dutch Oven !
If this is done correctly, a good time can be had by all.
Remember,,timing is everything.

Oh, and when you least expect it,, your spouse is likely to feed you the Dutch Oven too.

Yeah...I am not the only crazy scouter....son, senior in college, made Eagle with all 3 Palms 5 years ago and here hubby and me are still active ASM.

Great easy dutch oven recipe is Cranberry chicken:
2 lbs bone in or boneless chicken
1-2 cans of cranberries whole
1/2 a small bottle of French dressing
1 package of dry Lipton Onion soup or any generic

dump into a 6qt dutch and cook until chicken is done, stir occasionally
serve over rice and with a salad...you got a complete meal.
