Dumbo vs Atro Orbiter

I can not handle spinning rides well at all. I can do dumbo with the kids as long as we stay up high so I can look far in the distance. How does Astro Orbiter compare? It looks faster just watching it. My son is really into space right now so I know he'll want to do it but I don't want to ride along at the expense of feeling miserable the rest of the day. What about magic carpets? They look slow. TIA!

AO vehicles lean quite a bit and I think you will find it more uncomfortable than Dumbo.

AO is definately much faster. I like videoing during Dumbo, but AO feels too fast for me to securely hold the camera.

I learned (the hard way) about 15 years ago that my body couldn't handle intense spinning rides anymore. Dumbo and the Magic Carpets are still fine, so I ride those with the kids. I willingly rode AO for the last time in 2009 with then DD4. It's faster and more intense -- not overly so, but enough I'm not interested in doing it again. My advice is to try to distract him while in Tomorrowland. :thumbsup2

AO is faster than Dumbo, it is angled differently and it is much higher off the ground. So it is more than Dumbo in a different vehicle then. First time I did it, I didn't realize that but I figured it out fairly quick.

Having been to MK multiple times I feel silly saying this but I don't even know where the line to Astro Orbiter is. Since I have never wanted to do it I've never looked hard for it. I feel like it must be close to people mover. If I've never spotted the line before it may be easy to distract him from it. Do you ride an elevator up to it?

Yes, you ride the elevator to get to the ride.

I always feel like I'm going to fall out of the orbiter and find the setup if you are two adults to be very odd, almost like a small motorcycle orientation, if that makes sense- one person has their legs sticking straight out horizontally while the front rider is sort of packed into the nose of the rocket. Rode it with my mom last trip and thank goodness we are friendly.

When you're looking at the escalator to the People Mover, the line for the Astro Orbiter is directly to the right. You wait on the ground then go up as a group of about 10 people in the elevator.

To the OP..if you like to focus on something in the distance to get your mind off the spinning factor, don't go on Astro Orbiter. It's faster and higher than dumbo. It also leans so it feels like you're going to fall out lol. I love roller coasters and don't mind dumbo and other spinning rides..but after I rode Astro Orbiter I was dizzy for a minute. And trying to focus on something while you're on that ride is tough..everything you try to look at seems like a blur for the most part.

I will say though it is pretty cool being that high up and seeing over MK

I get dizzy in spinning things and did Astro for the first time on my last trip. The last 10 seconds or so it speeds up a bit before the ride ends and i was a bit dizzy when i got off.

AO i way high up in the air so if you can keep him looking forward and point out things like buzz and space mountain you should be fine

Thanks everyone! It sounds like I may be best off avoiding it. Maybe I'll chance it at the end of one night when I don't have a whole day ahead of me to still conquer. MK that high at night must be pretty!

Time it right and you can see the fireworks up there. The CM's will not let you stay up there unless you are riding (at least on our night) but they were so nice and not too many people were up there, they said go ahead and ride again so you can keep seeing the fireworks :)

The AK has a spinning ride in dinoland that isnt too bad. The Aladdin carpet ride in the MK isnt too rough either but of the spinning rides, I think that Astro Orbitter is far and away the biggest challenge of the bunch.

In contrast, I might start confessing to unsolved murders if they tried to keep me on it.

;)

I remember riding it in 1979. The rockets were the same set up then as now, minus the seatbelt.... we lived on the wild side in the 70's... LOL! Rode it the next time 2015 with my 2 grandaughters. All 3 of us wedged like sardines in that rocket and a seatbelt that was struggling to meet together. Needless to say, my experience in 2015 was not as much fun as my experience in 1979. Its very HIGH and seemed very FAST. No dizziness but I was glad it was OVER. I think Pop may have to take the next exploration to outer space.
