Dumb Question ... What is a sticky?

What is a "Sticky"??

It's a thread that always shows up at the top of the page. It "sticks" to the top of the page whether or not anyone posts to them.

If you look at the top of this forum page you will see 7 Sticky threads. I think those little blue push pins hold them up there.

Moderators can perform that DIS Magic, too. Basically a "sticky" is what some other forums call "Pinned", it depends on the board software. It functions as described by previous posters, it is a thread that stays at the top rather than continually move down if no one posts. Most forums use it for info that is deemed of value to a wide range of posters on an ongoing basis, for FAQ-type threads and for threads pertaining to forum rules. Also some forums use them for special notices and reminders, like if the boards are going off line for updates/repairs.
