Dumb question- labeling backpacks

This is silly, but I got my sons black and navy Jansport backpacks for kindergarten and now I don't know how/where to label them! There isn't the label where you can write it in and obviously no marker will show up on black or navy. Should I use a luggage tag or there any kind of sew in labels or something?

I had a silver sharpie and I'm sure that would show up on black and navy if you want to go the marker route.

The Sharpie would work and there are also a number of fabric pens that are made specifically to write on dark fabrics. I used them to put small decoratations on our black luggage so that it was easier to identify at the airport.

If you go to a fabric store, they sell these iron- on tags. Write on with a sharpie, then it sticks really well to the fabric. Just be careful not to melt the bookbag .

Silver sharpie will rub away with friction after awhile; you'll need to redo it often.

I use fabric paiint on the children's things. Loads of colors in nice applicator bottles, and it never rubs off. Normally I put name and phone number on the lining of the bag just inside the zipper opening.

Another vote for a silver sharpie. DDs ball glove is black. We used a silver sharpie. Worked like a charm!

Thanks so much for the replies! I didn't know they had silver sharpies and such, very good to know. Since all of dd's stuff has been pink/purple over the years, I've always just used a black sharpie on everything!

I went to Jo-Annes, got the marker and then at the front of the store passed some Disney iron-on patches that say Belongs to _____. So, those won out. How cute!

We ordered cute name tags from Stuck on You. You can also use different luggage tags. There are cute ones at Target. Another suggestion is to get some of the iron on patches. You could spell your child's first name or initials.

Not only that, but sorry to say, there are perverts among us who will act like they know a child because they can see the child's name on the outside of their back pack. You can make the child's back pack distinctive without announcing to the world what your child's name is.

I'd put a keychain or something distinctive on the outside (not their name) to help them identify their bag quickly at school. I teach at a middle school and there are dozens of identical backpacks and jackets. Label inside with names (and in 2 places, as mentioned before), but decorate outside so they don't accidentally pick up someone else's bag...and someone won't pick up theirs.

When I was in school I had my monogram embroidered on the front pocket. It was only a few bucks at the mall embroidery shop. It was nice because I had the same backpack as a couple of my friends and it was really easy to pick mine out if they were all in a jumble.
