Dumb pin trading question...

Even with dozens of trips under my belt, I am a complete pin-trading ignoramus. My DS7 has decided he wants to trade pins during our upcoming trip. I have done my research, and most people agree that the rubber backs are useless... I have read about the locking backs. But my question is this: if the backs lock, doesn't this make trading difficult?? How do you get the pin off to trade with a CM without taking forever to do so? Also, what is the best kind of pin back and where should I get them?

TIA!

IMHO, the rubber backs are not useless. Especially if one wants to trade. Locking backs are best to lock pins on your lanyard that you absolutely, positively want to make certain do not come off (in our families' parlance, these are called "show pins"). For trader pins, you don't want to have to unlock each time and the rubber pins should work fine. We do it all the time and, yes, sometimes a pin will fall off but you can usually hear it and find it quickly. JMHO.

Well, this is good to hear. Thanks!! We'll plan on keeping the rubber backs, then, as all the pins my son currently has he is willing to trade. It is more about the process of trading than the actual pins for him, I think!

Thanks!!

We only use locking backs on pins we want to keep forever. All others go on our lanyards with rubber backs. Otherwise yes, it takes forever for you to get them. LOL

I tend to find pin trading a tedious act after awhile so what I do is take off the 2-3 pins I KNOW I want to trade that day and put those in my pocket. I usually have a pretty full lanyard, so I don't miss the looks of the ones I have taken off.

But yeah, definitely use the locking backs on the ones you absolutely do not want to trade and keep the rubber ones for the pins you are willing to part with.

:)

We just pin-traded for the first time this past trip. My DS 7 and DS10 were the pin traders. The pin lanyards would occasionally get stuck on clothing/jacket and the rubber backs would come off too easily. We locked on every pin. If they wanted to trade I would unlock it and pull a rubber back out of my pocket to put on the pin being traded. Took about 10 extra seconds. One cast member complained, but Oh Well!, we didn't lose any pins. A few CM's even complimented the kids on being responsible for not taking the chance on losing pins.

Have fun!
