How can you say that? When they are 18 they can absolutely move out and do what they want. I don't see barbed wire and guards around their house. As far as finances and skills, many of us out here made something out of our lives with no assistance, family support or skills beyond a high school diploma. You get a job, or in my case TWO, you apply for scholarships, etc. I guess I don't understand why you are so adamant that they have no choice in their future.
They don't have the education or skills necessary to do that, and if you think they do you are fooling yourselves. They don't have a real high school diploma, and weren't taught anything they didn't need to run a home, except to play an instrument. They would be leaving without a dime, becuase they don't have any of thier own money. Do you really think they could make a go of it with no education, no, skills, and no money? How are they gonig to eat, where are they going to sleep until they get a job and income? Very few have the courage to face that down and actually leave without a dime and with no prospects. It would have to be a clean, no contact break form everything they have ever known. Add that to the fact that they have been taught all their lives that it would be contrary to God's will to do so, and I don't see how they have a lot of chioce in the matter. I have been in a situation very similar, and you cannot imagine how helpless you feel. I grew up in a very repressive church community for a time, and you cannot see an out, because you are told there is no acceptable out.

If the Duggars want to have 20 children and can do it without government support, then who am I to judge them?

Some people can bring up 20 children and do a great job when someone can have 1 and fail miserably.

TC :cool1:

So when is the show going to show the useful stuff? Like how to create your own church for tax exempt status, and running a shady buy here pay here car lot.

You are sadly mistaken about the Duggars, I have no idea how you grew up,, The kids are encouraged to go to college, in fact I believe one of the girls in college to be a nurse. This kids won't be disowned for moving out or choosing the life they want to have. The kids are homeschooled and are held to very strict standards are as all homeschooled kids in AR.

Why would a homeschooling education be any less than one a child recieves in a school? I have watched the Duggars from the very first specials on TLC and I can say that their children have had more experience doing things than most children will ever have. The older children volunteer with the local fire dept (even the girls), they are constantly going on mission trips to support people in third world countries and volunteering whenever they get the chance. Despite being on tv they remain humble and stick firm to their values. I don't see why you are so quick to criticize this family because of their religious views. They aren't different than any other family raising their children in religion. Michelle Duggar has talked mutliple times about her children wanting to grow up, go to college and become professionals in all different careers, if anything their upbringing will help them become more successful in life. And as far as the homefront is concerned, these children know how to cook, clean and do more household chores than the average senior getting ready to leave for college does. I know so many spoiled 18 year olds who never had to wash a load of laundry or make anything for food besides easy-mac. And I guess you don't realize that their oldest son runs his own used-car dealership, lives in his own house, is married with two kids before he's 25?? Yeah, no sense of reality at all.

Have you been to the car lot? It's a very popular place in Rogers to buy a car.

I think what you went through is masking your ability to see their life for what it is. Their diploma is completely acceptable - many homeschoolers have the same diploma. As far as money, they get a JOB - just like the rest of us - and if they have to stay at a friends house, a shelter or with cousin Amy they can - although I hardly believe their parent would not allow a job. See, the difference is, I don't believe they have been taught it is wrong for girls to work or go to school. I think they are choosing to live the life they want - I think your past has skewed your perspective.

They believe that a woman's place is in the home. I have seen several interviews where Michelle and Jim Bob have said over and over agian that the girls are expected to become wives and mothers, period, and the mothers should never ever work outside the home. They have toned much of what is said down a lot since the early shows because of the backlash. They are throwing the idea that mabye one will be a nurse out there in a vague, someday sort of way as a somke screen, nothing more. All the talk about allowing them to go to college has come about very recently, due to media pressure. They tout the fact that Anna has a college dregree. It is from a correspondance Bible college with similar philosophies.

Go back and watch the first special done with them and really listen to what thier religious philosophy is. I think you will be really suprised to hear what they really believe, what hasn't been voiced in years on the show. They have glossed over a lot since because over the negative responses. The oldest boy is a SON not a DAUGHTER. He is expected to support a family and given the skills to do so. The girls are not. The girls DON'T get the same education as the boys. They do a lot for the show, and it is really all for show. I believe that when it comes right down to it, they still beleive what thy said in the first special. The woman's place is in the home, never anywhere else. I really do challenge you to go back and watch that first special and see how you feel after hearing what they really believe about the place of women.

Again, go back and watch the first time these people were on camera. They SAID women shoudl NOT work outside the home, ever. In all of the early specials, before the show was picked up, the point about the place of women was made MULTIPLE times. They are not pushing it now on the show because of the backlash. So no, I don't believe it would ever be acceptable for one of thier daughters to have a job because THEY SAID SO.

Well That wasnt really my point there...but ok. My point was to the poster I quoted that it is easy to get a picture on how they are raised.:thumbsup2

Well - you know - they also never used to let the kids wear T-shirts, watch TV or several other things. I have also heard them say that the kids can do what they want when they grow up - and have talked about what the girls would like to do. Kids get to choose their own path. Just as a child who was raised to believe women should always work, and always go to school has a choice to stay home and be a housewife - without a college degree!

I have watched from day one and don't recall what you are saying at all. One if not more the girls are in a local college down here. Cousin Amy or Jim Bob sister or his mom don't share there views and they still hang out with them. how do you explain that

Mabye they have changed, but having been there I think it is much more likely that they are saying what people want to hear and allowing certian things for the benefit of a TV audience that pays the bills. I don't think any of those girls will ever get a job or get out of that lifestyle. If they do, I will be very surprised. The pull of that ideology is just so strong.

How do you know this? I'm sorry if you grew up in a church community that you did not care for, but that doesn't mean everyone who grew up w/ religion grew up "repressed". Hasn't the oldest girl moved out on her own, I'm sure if there was anything negative ie; starving , homeless, non skilled, the rags would be out there printing it. I thought I read that the oldest (can't remember her name) was going into nursing?

Agian, go back and watch the very first special. Michelle has on a dress with a huge white collar and is sittng there with Jim Bob. He says that "we don't believe women should work outside the home" and "we believe women belong in traditional female roles of wife and mother". I remember it so vividly because it was so similar to things I had heard over and over. It is made VERY clear what they believe. Seriously. Go back and look at it. It has been a LONG time since this was on TV, becuase of the backlash. Look at the interview transcripts from that time. You will see it agian. It was talked up mostly in the first 2 tv specials ,and not so much when the series started because by then they had fugured out it was NOT a good thing to play up on mass market TV.

Yes - that may be what the parents believe - but they that doesn't mean they haven't given the kids the right to choose that they believe.

WOW!!!! I can not believe some of the things posted on this thread! WHO CARES?????

If a married couple wants to have 20 kids and raise them according to their beliefs, by all means, go for it!!! It's not like she's the Octo-mom, or that he's a politician fathering a child out of wedlock while his wife is dying of cancer and spending campain funds to hide his mistress while he is running for president, or they are living off the state! WHO CARES??

If you don't like them and don't believe in what they believe in....TURN THE CHANNEL!!!!!!!! Go back to watching Teen Mom and Jersey Shore and Keeping up With The Kardashians!

I certainly don't want 19 kids! I have a hard enough time keeping up with the 2 that I have. But someone said it before...I would rather have my kids watching The Duggers than some of the above mentioned crap that is out there!

I don't get why people are so judgemental! You have your beliefs and they have theirs! It's America! It's what makes our country so great!!!

Now if you will excuse me, I need to catch up on The Real Housewives of New York!

these people are so brainwashed its sick....

It's cliche, but amen to that. Religion should not dictate lifestyle choices. This is why I hate conservative Christianity, or any other religion that restricts what clothes you wear, what food you eat, what job you take, etc. It's possible to believe in a god or subscribe to a religion without letting it take over everything you do.
