any ideas how to keep my thryoid in check? what foods to try to get more of, etc? are there any vitamins that i should be taking that will help? (I know red yeast helps with the cholesterol) thanks

You should not stop your thyroid medicine without talking to your doctor -- just call the nurse if you don't want to go in for a visit. Your doctor might have some free samples to give you. Levothyroxine is $4 for a 30 day supply at Wal-Mart. Most pharmacies will match that price. Your thyroid affects so many systems in your body and complications can cause serious side effects, not to mention it taking months to get your body back in balance when it is out. I would find another place to economize that doesn't jeopardize my health if I were you. and good luck to you.

There is absolutely no reason to go off thyroid meds. You will gradually feel tired, then sick. Hair falling out and so on.

Thyroid hormone has been available as a generic for sometime. Many people just pay the $3.00 or $4.00 because it's cheaper than their regular copay. (This is what I do.)

If you can't afford $3.00 a month, talk to your pharmacist. There are programs to help folks who are unable to pay for their needed medications.

Attempting to vitamin instead of taking your medication won't work. Your body need thyroid hormone in accurate doses.

Good luck to you. :goodvibes

You'll need a Dr. or Nurse practitioner to write a prescription. Your options would be to call around, find out what it would cost for an office visit, basic bloodwork--usually just TSH, sometimes they do one or two other tests.

Make sure you tell them you don't have insurance, will cash pay. That way you should be able to get a pretty accurate quote. Another possibility would be to find a clinic for the uninsured. They are usually free or sliding fee. Ask for details.

One of the best ways to find places is just keep asking questions. If one clinic doesn't have what you need, ask where they would recommend you call.
Tell them you're new in town, need to have your thyroid meds refilled.

Most important thing is that you don't stop your medication. Thyroid disease can gradually make you feel really rotten.

Good luck to you!!

Or even call your old doctor and ask for a refill, even for a few months, at a national pharmacy, i.e. Walgreen's or Walmart and have it filled locally. Depending on how long it has been since you've had bloodwork done, it might only be a month or two but maybe it will tide you over for a bit longer. If you explain your situation, just moved, having finanicial issues, they will help you find some resources to help you. Your health is so important, you can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself. :flower3:

Just call your former Doctor and have the number for a local pharmacy to give him/her. If you have been under their care, you should have no problem getting it called in.
