DTD to Fort Wilderness

Hi, I was wondering if someone could tell me how many minutes it would take to get from downtown disney(staying @ SSR) to fort wilderness? Have a reservation for a trail ride and this is my first time going to fort wilderness and don't want to be late. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you're driving, it is very close. Make a left out of the SSR main entrance, then a right, then a left and Fort Wilderness id on the right. If you don't have a car, then I would recommend a cab. Bus would take a LOT longer.

Isn't there a bus that goes from the Fort to DTD? Seems like we took one coming back to the Fort once from DTD?

If you just want to use Disney transportation then you have a few options.

Bus from DTD to FW but then you need to take the internal FW buses to the trail ride. Never had luck with either of those being quick.

The route I always use and some may disagree is we take the Magic Kingdom bus from SSR then from the MK we take the boat over to FW. It seems super fast in the mornings because everyone is going opposite the direction we are going. Usually takes less than 30min this way. Not sure if its best later in the day. We try and do TE for breakfast at least twice each trip and this route has been the most successful.

We are DVC members and our home is SSR but I grew up at the Fort so I get back there as often as possible. Give it a try and if you find something quicker, post it and let us know.

Our reservation is in the afternoon. We won't have a car during our trip. For the trail rides do I have to check in at a certain building first? Or can I go straight to the outpost. Thank you both for your feedback.

Just to clarify, the Fort is so big it has bus connections at two ends, the Outpost end (the main check in area and also where the trail ride area is and the DTD bus connection) and the Settlement end (down by the beach, boats to Contemporary or Magic Kingdom, bus to Wilderness Lodge). Three different internal bus loops run within the Fort between Outpost and Settlement (Yellow, Orange, Purple).

From DTD, the busses generally run about every 20 minutes <supposedly>. They will run you to the Outpost area where the main checkin building is. There is a big parking lot beside it and behind it is the bus stop where you will be dropped out from DTD and the internal busses stop here also. The horse corral/barn for the trail rides is immediately behind the Outpost bus stop. You can clearly see the horses and the smell of "horse" will get you ready for your ride/walk. This is where you will check in.

PS - the area in the middle of the Fort is the Meadow area where the big Trading Post is, the Bike Barn, the pool, and the campfire singalong/movie area. So the three main areas are Outpost and Settlement on the ends and Meadow in the middle.

Thank you for your detailed response on where everything is located. I feel much better having a clear understanding on where to get off. I think I will chance taking the DTD bus since it will drop me off where I need to be. Looking forward to the trail ride with my daughter and for getting a look around the campground. The ride itself doesn't go through the campground. It takes you on trails through the woods surrounding the campground - and you may see some wildlife during your ride. We saw turkey and a family of deer including a baby.

If you have time after your ride, hop on one of the internal buses and explore the campground a bit. You won't regret taking the time.

Lol thanks for the heads up, I haven't been horseback riding in a very long time. Forgot how it feels afterwards. It's a good thing we aren't going to a park when we're done. .. We love wildlife so my daughter will be thrilled to see some out there. Glad to hear you and your daughter enjoyed it.
