DD14 is taking photography in High School. They use SLR to learn phtography basics. I bought her a used RebelG from Craigslist and wants to know if she can use my DSLR lenses? I have the 50mm f1.8, 18-55 kit lens from my XT, 30-700mm IS, 28-125mm IS, 17-40mm L, signma 30mm and Tamron 17-55mm.

Also.. any harm in mounting the lens and see if it'll focus? will I blow the lens contact and ruin the lens?

Thanks for any info.

Sue

make sure the DSLR lens doesn't have anything sticky out the bottom of the lens further than on your SLR lens. I've heard that a few, not many but a few DSLR lenses stick out further than the SLR lenses and that protrusion could actually touch the mirror.

That said, if the lens will attach there isn't going to be any problem with electronics blowing anything up, the only problem you'll have is with vignetting that will happen with a lens made for a APS sized sensor used with a 35mm film frame... that might not be noticable on all picture or with all lenses but it will certainly be noticable with some...

Check and see if the lens you are wanting to use is compatible with the full frame Canon cameras if it is then there will be no vignetting, if it isn't then there will be.

If your lenses are EF-S lenses (as I believe the Rebel XT kit lens is), they will not work on the Rebel G. The EF-S lenses are designed specifically for digital and have a protrusion that puts the rear element closer to the digital sensor. I don't think an EF-S lens will even mount on an EF body like the Rebel G, but even if it does mount, don't use it. The EF-S lenses will crash with the mirror on the 35mm body. Your other lenses, if they're EF mount, will work on the Rebel G, but if they're specifically designed for the smaller APS-C digital sensor, you will get noticeable vignetting when used on a full frame 35mm.
