With cable you are vulnerable even when not surfing, because it is always open...that is why you need a firewall and you should never shut it down. I have had cable for about 2 years now, no problems at all. I also NEVER notice any loss in speed, it is so much faster than the DSL service I had. I hate waiting for anything, cable is fast and instantaneous.
I've had bot hand DSL is like a faster version of dial up...only not THAT much faster...I have cable now and what a difference! I would never go back to DSL.
There is NO answer to this question. It completely depends on where you live. In some area's the cable is better and 3 blocks away the DSL can be better. Your best bet is to ask some neighbors and seee what works.

My cable box did not have an on/off switch. I would have actually had to disconnect it from my computer. My co-worker (who had a different cable company) did have an on/off switch on his cable box and he would turn his off. Don't know why my cable company didn't offer that type of box?
My DSL box has an on/off switch but I don't feel the need to use it.

We have cable for 3 or 4 years and have been pleased with it.
You don't need to use the modem provided by your ISP. They are pretty generic. You can buy one with the features (reset buttons, etc) you like and use it. It will save you the monthly fee they charge you for the model too.
