DS7 is asking for a magic kit for Christmas - I'm having to order one online because no one locally has in stock. I hate ordering online when I can't see / touch something first- esp when I have no idea what I'm buying. Anyone have suggestions? DS is Gifted so I'm torn between the ones I'm finding which seem geared to preteens and the ones which are for younger kids... Help?!

Those magic kits would have more to do with a child's hand size and small motor skills than their intellectual acumen. Magic is about slight of hand and distraction. The kits meant for children have smaller tools that can be manipulated easier by small hands and might be a better fit for your son, given his age.

Thanks! That is helpful for sure! Though his mind is agile, his coordination is not that great & speed is probably a bit slower than his peers (except when turning pages while reading books).

I got the Melissa and Doug Deluxe Magic set last year for DD7. It was perfect for her, a few easy and a few more challenging. Think about also adding the magic disappearing pages coloring book. She loved them both! In fact, she brought 2 tricks to school last week to amaze her class. I found both things on Amazon for less than $40

Sounds just like DD who is 8. (Fyi-we were really surprised at the huge jump in her coordination when she hit 8. I can't believe the writing is even the same child. Her computer and video game skills have improved too- we're probably the only family that bought our kid a DS and video consoles and begged her to play it to try to improve her motor skills. ;))

Have you seen this one?

We don't have it, but our G-T teacher swears by the Mindware website and they types of things they sell.

This one looks fun too and it has good reviews:

My son was about that age when we got him the Melissa and Doug deluxe magic kit. I'd post a link but am too lazy to logout of Amazon to do so.

It looks like a few items have been changed, but most of it looks like the same stuff. He still plays with it at age 11. He's also into cards and card tricks. I think there is a book of those at Barnes and Noble.

Do you have any local, independent toy stores around? Those smaller stores tend to stock items like this.

I've seen magic sets and Barnes and Noble that we have gotten as gift for friends (friends of my 6 and 8 yo). My sone got one as a gift when he was 6 or 7 and loved it. They have different sets with different themes.

I would try cslling here, this is a straight up pro magic shop but they have a great range and incredibly knowledgable staff that can help you. My husband started going in college and when we wanted stuff for the kids they helped us pick items when our kids were little.

Bought a Melissa & Doug one online - no local shops around here but plan to go to the bookstore in the next town over to see about a book on magic tricks / card tricks for him. The kit I ordered was the nicer of two "basic" looking kits I found - the deluxe kit was not in stock. I may buy the other basic one & put it all together into one "package" gift for him. I'll see when this one arrives.
