Yup it happened, we were coming in with the groceries yesterday, the kids sat down to color while we were putting them away, and we look up to DS3, proudly with a lap full of his hair. It looks really really bad. I'm thinking our options are use his fall school photo and forego the annual sibling portrait, get shots of them with caps on for a portrait, give him a crew cut (sorry for anyone who likes them, I just don't), keep the hair he has and memorialize the cut for eternity. What would you do?

OH, I feel your pain!!!! When my boys were younger, my oldest got ahold of his dad's hair clippers........... and my middle son got clipped!!! He had bald spots all over his little head, and short spots here and there, it was horrible, and it was all over his head, not just one spot. I had only gone to take out the trash......... he was very quick!!!! I'm so sorry for you!!! I made my son wear a snow hat/beanie......... which wouldn't have been so bad, except it was summer, and he was 2 so he wouldn't keep a ball cap on!! I really don't have a suggestion other than having him wear a santa cap, or getting a really short cut......... sorry!!! Trust me, it's a memory that will last his lifetime!!!! My boys are now both in college....... and we still "tease" about that!!!!

Good Luck!

you have plenty of time just hold off alittle on the PICS. kids hair grows fast go get it all cut now and let it grow back in even .you don't have to do a CC just leave some bangs and shave to rest as close as needed to even out.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: That's so funny!

if you have an older DS/DD have them wear a santa hat (as somebody sad above) and have a younger one (or how many others you have) wear elves hat....dress the santa one in red and the elves in green...my cousin did this...and their pics turned out GREAT!

and yes..the youngest hair was so butchered!

Santa hats are a great hide but I would take some with just how it looks I know now is not the time to bring it up it is a sore subject but down the road this is what will be brought up for ever. I know I have one like the that and we have many stories to share.

I agree! It's not a sore subject. If this was the worst of my worries, I'd be thrilled. I just can't decide what to do, and am thinking I agree with posters to get rid of the hair, but I will definitely get some good "head shots" for the record. I can kind of comb some of the hair over it and plaster it with hair goop. You know kind of like the older men with no hair on top do! (Sorry for any Robin Hoods out there! :rotfl: )

Somefolks today at our inside playground were looking at him really strangely, and then at me --they must have thought something was really wrong with his mother! Don't we all know a hack job by a toddler/preschooler when we see one?!!!

Be glad it was a ds and not dd. My oldest daughter at the age of 5 had the most beautiful curly LONG hair. My second dd woke up in the middle of the night and decided to play beauty parlor. Bad news, my oldest DD was laying on her side, so she only cut a 1/2 cut. Good news...ydd didn't cut it all the way to the scalp. She only did that to her hair. Terrible morning that was! Still don't know how she even found scissors. I have 5 pictures where ydd has right in the front of her head NO HAIR. She literally cut it to the scalp in July. I tell her all the time..that is the picture going in her senior yearbook!

OP...I think the Santa Hats are a great idea. I also agree, get it cut and you will be surprised how quickly it will grow back!

I agree that Santa hats are a good idea. You could always post a picture for us though. Memorialize it here on the DIS.

Okay I will post pix of the before and after, but you guys have to point me to a thread to teach me how to upload pix! I for some reason have not figured that out yet. Daaaah to me!

And Kellyg403, your story deserves pix too! Sounds truley dismal, but so funny! My DD5 did this 2 years ago-not nearly as severe as yours, but cut every bit of hair around her head from her one ear all the way around to the other ear. She looked like a monk! a monk, I tell you!

Flat Tops always look good on little boys, hair on the front is spiked up. I think thats in fashion ( spiked hair ).

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: My daughter cut her own (waist-length) hair. princess: It was a sad day for her daddy, let me tell you.

I agree with above. My 5 year old daughter thought she needed her bangs trimmed and didn't tell anyone she was doing it. Right before our annual Easter pics. My wife was distraught but my daughter was even more remorseful. She was so embarrased and didn't want to go anywhere or be seen by anyone. We had them evened a little but it just took time...not much time either.

Take lots of pics and remember we have ALL been there and I bet if we were honest did that ourselves at their age.

I will never forget a few years ago when my daughter was 3 and my youngest son almost 5. I was at work, and DH was supposedly watching them. I got a call from DH who was very upset that youngest DS had cut his sister's hair. (After 3 boys, DH wanted a REALLY girlie girl with long hair!). I asked how bad it was, and DH said "Oh, just a little cut in the front." When I got home I found that DD had bangs which were about a milimeter long in some places and 2 inches long in others, alternating short and long, of course. She also had a spot on the side of her head with NO hair, and varying lengths in the back. I asked DH how this had happened when he was watching them, and he said he didn't know, it must have happened while he was fixing dinner. He only noticed the problem when he went to give them baths and found the sink full of hair. (Very observant DH didn't notice during dinner that DD was practically bald). Anyway, I went to check on DS who was asleep, and found that he had a 1 inch stripe down the middle of his head with NO hair. DD had used a razor on him! But DH was so mad about DD's hair he hadn't even noticed DS's bald spot. I thought I would never stop laughing! :rotfl:

Anyway, I ended up having to shave DS's hair (It is dark brown, and nothing else would work), and taking DD to the beauty shop so they could try to fix hers. But both of them had weird hair for a long time. We have some GREAT photos immortalizing their handiwork.

So, if I were you, I'd take the pictures you were planning to take as is, and laugh about it for years to come. After all, they're only young once, and cutting their own hair is pretty common. Anyone seeing the pictures will understand.

I would just buzz it even and wait a few weeks to take the picture if you can, it will grow back quickly.

And, a story of commiseration: When I was 4 and my Dsis was 6 she decided to play beauty parlor and cut my hair, against my will. We both had long hair--down to the middle of our backs. She cut my hair above my ears! My mother was so mad, she took me to the beauty parlor to have it evened out, and then she made my sister get her hair cut just as short as mine as punishment! Needless to say, my Dsis never touched my hair again.

My DD was 5 years old when a freinds child cut her hair off to the scalp. How he had scissors I do not know, both my DD and me were in tears, she had hair down to her bum, it was just before xmas and she was an angel in the school nativity play (because of her long blonde hair!!)
She is almost 12 now and has just had he hair cut off to her shoulders
It will grow quick, buzz it all off, believe me it will grow back quicker than you think. My DS has real thick hair and we keep it short so it looks tidy and he needs it cut every 5-6 weeks.
