On friday my DS11 broke his leg while at camp. We are flying to FL in Sept on SW. What should I expect? I called the airline and they said it was noted a wheelchair was needed at the skycap. Are there seets just for handicap, or should I just go fo the bulkhead seats? Any advice you can give will be great, thisis a first for me.

Sorry to hear about the accident. I don't think there are handicap seats. If there are someone will tell you. I'd go for the bulkhead.

I just returned a week ago from WDW and I saw sooooo many kids/adults with legs in casts in the parks. You just have to re-think your plans some.

Good luck!!

sorry to hear this.

You might check o nthe disabilities board for more info.

Thank you for your answers. I didn't think there were seats on the plane, and I didn't remember about the handicap boards.

Sorry he broke his leg!

Regretfully you can request the bulkhead, but if it's part of the emergency exit row, as it is on many planes these days, you won't be able to sit there. Also, those seats are often given priority to the super frequent fliers.

They are pretty good about transporting you with an electric cart, but if it's super busy you might need to wait, and it might be faster for him to just use his crutches if you have a tight connection. :(

Some of the aisle seats have armrests which lift up to facilitate wheelchair passengers getting in and out, you might ask about that.

You might also want to wait until last to board to decrease the possibility of someone banging into him.

Hi, dbogen!

Come on over to the disABILITIES board for any questions you might have about getting around at WDW with someone on crutches. Southwest air will allow you to pre-board because your son is considered to be temporarily disabled. Bulkhead seats aren't always the best seats when a leg is in the cast, as there isn't that space under the seat in front of you. When you pre-board, remember that the crutches don't count towards your carry-on limit. I would suggest getting a seat as close to the front of the plane as possible and maybe even an aisle seat if he needs a bit more space.

As far as the wheelchair...mention it to the gate attendants before you board, mention it to the flight attendants when you get on the plane and mention it again to the flight attendants before landing. Plus, calling 48 and 24 hours before your flight to remind them that you will need a wheelchair, while not required seems to help get that written down somewhere(smile).

Hope you have a great trip!
